Honestly I do some musky fishing, and sometimes the best thing to do is to cut the hook. Bring something strong enough to cut the hook and within a few days the hook will eventually dissolve.

Tons of Cats, a few Pike and 'eyes. Sheephead, Bowfin, Mooneye,Carp you name it, it lives in the Grand.

No, I've caught both as far up as Caledonia, not common but I see a couple of each every year. The Grand has so many types of fish you never know what is biting til you land it, except Smallies, they usually show themselves seconds after being hooked LOL. That's why I prefer live bait there, you can catch anything.w_ boughner said:

Thanks.. Yah ive been fishing with my stick baits all summer .. I really should switch it up but its soo hard to when your getting fish all day. Definetly will try a shallow crank bait.fishy_slayer said:
I hear ya. I've been doing live bait for years and catching fish. My friend has recently started using jigs and is getting them. I keep thinking if we get a slow day I will tie on a jig. My live bait hasn't stopped working yet. If it works don't fix it ;-) .420fisherman said:

boys live bait is all I have to say for the grand I was there today and had another 20 fish day a nice mixture of smallies, mooneye and channel cats today I took some pics but my phone is acting up it got a little moisture inside it so when I get the chance I will post the pics and I dropped my damn pliers in the water to but hey im happy as a pig in doodoo u gotta love when everyone on the river is watching u hit fish after fish and wondering what secret bait ur usinglol.

Its too bad when they get a little to agressive with the hooks but I find that keeping a close eye on your line for a faster hook set is the best way to improve the odds of a "good hookset". Unfortunitely there is always times where the fish do get more hook then you intended. When this happens there is a few things you can try: snipping your barbs is helpful but not ideal if you are not catching alot of fish and want the few that do bite to hold. A good pair of needle nose pliers is esential that have a spring to keep then open, also having a sharp knife is a must. sometimes when the hook is passed the muscles in the throat I have gotten it out by opnening the throat with the pliers and pushing further down then pulling the hook out clean. When that is not an option sometimes i'll pull up on the hook as terrible as that sounds it pulls the skin tight around the hook so I can see how much of the hook is burried then I use a sharp knife and make a small slice removing the hook and doing as minimal damage to the fish as possible. I feel a small slice in the throat skin is better then leaving the hook inside. if the hook is wrapped around a gill i'll simply cut the line and pull it out from the bottom.
I have caught fish with hooks in their mouths (not mine) which sugests that despite the hook the fish has returned to normal feeding behavior
