Fished the saugeen on Sunday. Water is still a bit high but runnung very clear. Hooked one by accident in the dorsal quickly got it in and safely released. My friend mike hooked a nice post spawned female that fought well. We fished further upstream iaround walkerton and things were very slowwwww. Lots of fish around still paired up and we fished the deeper runs hard but not alot of action....the par seemed to like my 6 mil beads and had to take it off cause the hook kept getting fouled in them. Was a nice day to be out for sure. My steelhead season is officially done til fall. Fixing to get my lessons and practice in on the switch rod...then looking forward to the swing.

Steelhead and Salmon forum rules
  • Naming Rivers: The naming of any specific river or tributary is not permitted in the publicly viewable general discussion forum. Instead, please refer to the river by the general area it is located, ie “East Trib”, “West Trib”, “GB (Georgian Bay) Trib”, etc. For example, you are not allowed to say "I had a great day fishing yesterday on Wilmot Creek", instead, we encourage members to say "I had a great day fishing yesterday on an East Trib". The former statement should be relegated to the reports sections (coming soon), away from public view.
  • Lining Debate: "Lining", "snagging" or "flossing" fish is a hot-button topic that often ruins otherwise productive conversations. In order to keep the general discussion forum clean, helpful and productive, it is the policy of OFF that any and all "lining" conversation/debate be conducted in the "Salmonid Insanity" sub-forum.
  • Forum Etiquette: Simple - Be polite, keep it civil. All personal attacks, insults, inflammatory remarks, threats, racist remarks, trolling and otherwise rude and/or immature behaviour are strictly forbidden and will be met with disciplinary action up to and including permanent banning.

No big deal but we try not to name specific spots here. Like if you said the same area was on fire all the creepers might flock there lol

I fish this water regularly so there's a good chance I have run into you guys in the past, are you around northern tribs often?

Sorry about naming the river...Dont fish there too often. Couple times a year maybe...not my first choice of places i would rather fish, mainly because of the drive and never really produces well for me, unless your fishing specific areas and like combat fishing. Not my style so i usually try to seek out less likely areas.

It can be a different experience than some other rivers imo.

I love the big water, I never seem to stray to far from it.

For me fishing isn't just about catching fish, I enjoy the scenery and experience just as much. The river seems almost endless with possibility's moved forward by it's unbridled power.

i think this year will be an epic one for natural steelhead reproduction on the geen. Many fish got way up in the system before opener. With the big thaw and crazy high levels fish could basically swim over the dams in many areas. I personally haven't done great on this river system this spring, as I think most are in the sanctuary.

Actually it can be a big deal. I just posted on another thread and don't know how to move my post here too, so I will repeat. (although I will shorten what I said before.)
A few years back some "shittehead" decided to make a video while fishing Specks at a place I used to fish for them regularly. The video gave exact directions to the place, and then he posted it on youtube. I started to notice people there all the time when before there was no one. When I discovered the video I knew why. The fish became smaller and fewer in a few short years. I don't even go there anymore.

Not trying to be harsh on you Dave, don't take this personally, I see you got the point and I know the area you spoke of well, practically grew up there and it includes miles of river. I'm just illustrating why the rules are in place for everyone to see, and what can happen.

So what should I have said?

Should we have come down on him like we did to thos two kids who just happened to post a pic of a fish on a stringer? Have we heard from them again? I don't think so.

I noticed he was a new member, I polity informed him about the rules here about posting names and no hard feelings. If we slam every new member who didn't happen to notice/think the rules were enforced so stringently we could be losing some great contributing members IMO.

I totally understand where you are coming from when you talk about someone burning a spot that holds a population of indigenous fish that are very sensitive to pressure, totally agree and respect that.

I am one of the few people it seems who even say anything when people start naming gbay and huron tribs spots but I try to do it in a nice way and even then it seems to cause some hard feelings.

What im attempting to get at here is that I believe we can inform new people of the rules without making them feel alienated. When I joined if I had unwittingly named a river in a post and got a sh*t storm in reply I would have more than likly not continued to be an active member, It must be very disheartening for the people who do it by unknowingly.

sorry, rant over lol

Rite of passage...besides folks like Dave (who is a standup guy and admin on another board) once apprised of the rules will simply consider the matter closed...no ego, no harm-no foul...

Happy to have you both aboard...

Sorry for getting your feathers up river55. I did make a point of saying I wasn't trying to be harsh on Dave, and for him not to take anything I said personally. I did quote his apology and I understand mistakes happen and he is sorry. No Problem. I thought I was polite, I tried to be.
I wasn't trying to alienate anyone.
My point was to show what can happen to places and why OFF has the rules it does, so other members can see that this is real and know why.
I was not trying to center out anyone, I welcome all new members, only trying to educate a little.
I'm not here to cause shitte, only to share and learn.

I apologize Alfie I didn't intend to direct that right at you. I should have been more polite on my part. I was just making a point about how it can happen not that you were. Again sorry, that came off a bit harsh I didn't intend to be rude.

All's cool.

I think everyone on this forum I have encountered is extremely respectful of each other (unlike a lot of salmon fishermen I run across (hey.. the emperor has no clothes!))

I do find it odd that only salmon/steelhead posts must apply to the "rules" but i admit i find it kinda romantic to have my favoured species are a little pedestrian by the noodle rodding set. :)

That being said, good on ya alfie and river and dave for having the maturity to discuss matters that are important to you in a civilized way.

Let's save the vitrol for the cement companies amd the developers...

Glad you see it that way chalkhorse, I believe that is the way the rule was intended too. I'm sad to say I don't think it was intended to help Brookies and head-waters although they should be included.
Yes I have talked to alot of members of this forum and met quite a few in person. Never had a bad experience.
