Quite a few guys running shimano rods...at first i was skeptical having ran a HMX and IM6 previously. I am very happy with the performance of the clarus, its got the power down low to turn big fish but soft enough to run the light leaders needed to catch wild fish in low clear water under heavy pressure. I had a convergence 7' casting rod and was generally pleased with it, how do you guys like convergence float rod? Does it have spinning guides?

Yes , GBD it does , but I find it doesn't make it any less of a float rod .
It's really light which balances out nicely with my Raven Vectra , being a light reel .
I have an IM8 that's gathering dust with float guides on it , but I'm just comfortable with the Convergence .

My old HMX had spinning guides ....way better in the cold season . Clarus is pretty heavy and has float guides i'm gonna retie it with spinning i think. are your guides fuji or stainless?

Yesterday I fished the Credit with a Sage XP 1008 outfitted with a Ross BG5 and got my ass kicked by guys using cheep float gear and roe bags. Just goes to show ya the gear does not make the man. LOL
Tight lines ladise and gents.

I would agree, I think the convergence is a decent rod.

I was always under the impression that the quality of a float rod isnt that important because they are so long and have no sensitivity so why spend so much on a rod.(my own reasoning not based on any lessons from others) Is the Okuma Sheffield considered a decent float rod? I saw it at Bass Pro once for around $150 so if price is any indicator it must be ok. I have never laid my hands on any of these higher end float rods.

That is incorrect. There are many factors that are associated with the high retail cost of quality float rods.
1. Quality of materials used to create the blank. (No sagging tips)
2. Technology behind the design of the blank (ex: How straight a blank is)
3. Overall weight. (most low to mid class float rods use heavy construction to alleviate tip sag.)
4. Parabolic arch (Designed properly will aid in absorbing the shock of trying to battle a 20lb bow, using 4lb test....)
5. Strength of the blank (Turning power)

Those are just some examples, of points I take into consideration when looking to spend some of my hard earned $$, on a new float rod.

What does that mean for my Okuma Float rod, I know it isnt in the same class as the high end rods im just curious if it is viewed as a decent rod or a waste of money. I bought it off kijiji with my sheffield reel for something like $175 so im not going to feel terrible if most people think its a piece of crap im just curious as to what the consensus is.

Your whole rig is worth 350-400.00 brand new, so for 175 .00 you probably got a good deal. The Okuma line in my opinion has good value for their float rods, so your rod is a good rod for the entry level of the market and the reel is a decent reel.

never fished or even seen a sheffield rod fished but id say you made a good purchase.....my first float rod was 12'6'' pfleuger man was it tip heavy.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, Okuma has "Aventa" and "Guide Series" float roads, there is no sheffield rod. For float reels okuma has the "Aventa", "Sheffield" (which from what I remember also comes with a drag), and now the Raw II

Yeah well, let's run pheromone rich, loonie-sized roe bags duh....or lets run a small #12 bead headed nymph.........................

I often fish my z-axis and will give any float guy a run for his money--don't sweat it Header

Okuma has for float rods, sst, aventa and guide select models. They have two models of the sheffield reel, one with a drag and one with out a drag. The Raw II is a completely different reel.

Forgot about the SST. Now that I think about it the Sheffield sub-model with the drag is the "Sirata"

The backplate on the RAW II looks identical to the Aventa and Sheffield, I bet you could probably interchange the spools on them, not that there is any need :)

It would be interesting to see if it fits.

I did some googling, they all share the same 1002 designation. The Spools look like they have the same CAD program for machining too, the centre knobs, and two screws that bolt the "handle plate", if you will, appear to be in the same spot. I bet you could swap the handle plate from a Raw II to a Sheffield or Aventa.

I'll try and compare my aventa with a raw or sheffield next time I come across one.

Well I dont have the rod right now as it is back at by parents house but I am 90% sure I remember the rod saying Sheffield right on it and im pretty sure I saw one at Bass Pro sometime. I will confirm once I get a chance to pick up my rod.
