Hey all. Sent my pa down to gagnon to take care of a little Christmas shopping for me. He did an awesome job got 8 lb siglon and 6 lb drennan flouro. Wondering if i should return flouro for 4lb, heard drennan is a little stronger than advertised. I am just a little nervous i wanna keep above swivel breaks to a minimum. Ive always used 6lb frogs hair with 8lb siglon and have been fine just heard stories about drennan bein 2lbs heavier than advertised. If anyones used it and can help me out id appreciate it. Merry christmas

i am pretty sure i have a very long and detailed post on this subject i wrote last year. just look through my posts. long story short, go by diameter not poundage, and the drennan will break your main line every time you snag as it stands. you always want your main line to your leader to be at least .002" different in diameter. 6lb froghair is 3.5lb drennan. most japanese lines follow close to IGFA diameters and strengths.

Once you look at it from a line diameter point of view, the different brand names start to look more similar in terms of performance.

A fellow that ran his own elaborate tests using a weigh scale said that Drennan fluro test at the stated rating which surprised me, but this fellow is very through so I tend to believe him.

thanks staffman just did my own backyard test broke flouro before mono 10/10 times hopefully this trend keeps up on the river

I've used Drennan for years and have never had a issue with the main line breaking first. Keep the 6lb lead (there really is no need for anything lighter) and if you find the main line breaking, bump up the lb test of it instead. I found there are some main lines (Siglon F and Raven to name a couple) that needed to be a higher lb test. If I normally ran 8lb, those lines would be 10lb or 12lb.

Id have no problem bumping up lines if my rod were rated for a higher strength. Ive seen too many people void warranties on broken rods due to not using reccomended line strength. Ill put it to use when weather clears up a but, hopefully sooner than later. Thanks for the help i appreciate it

The line rating on a rod is not about the main line you are using, its about the lightest line you have on the set up. If your rod is rated for ten pounds, your mainline can be as heavy as you want it to be, as long as your leader line is ten pounds or less. Keep your leader line under the rod rating and you will not have any issues with rods breaking (at least not because of the line anyway).

that is good. but that is very strange. because the drennan is same diameter. if drennan snaps around 6lb then imo it is not even worth buying more once you finish your spool. you can get a 6lb igfa leader that will snap 5.99 that is A LOT thinner = less visible to fish and 1/3 of the price.

so as i said, they seem to have nurfed the strength of the drennan. i would not buy it again once you run out. it is WAY TOOO THICK for how strong it is and how much it costs.

Ive stuck with my usual 4x frog hair and am using the drennan as a shot line until gone... Im not sure i am completely turned off of it tho.. Other than cost

fluorocarbon has poor knot strength, i would not use it for shot line. trad it with someone. most people love that stuff. seaguar has new leader that is cheap 100 for 12bucks.

fluoro breaks on the knot. that's the weakest point. 4lb will be more invisible than 6lb. but 6lb will not break faster than 4lb. pros & cons. I have no problem handling 6lb - 12lb fish on a 4lb redwing fluoro...not even a toothy pike.
