Hey there,

Going camping in Silent Lake on August 23rd for 3 days. Has anyone tried fishing this Lake? I understand that there are some Lake Trout there but since there are no motorized vehicles allowed on the lake and only canoe rentals available, does anyone have any suggestions for fishing these bad boys from a canoe. Tactics, methods or otherwise. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Silent Lake by Bancroft?

Hmm hmmmmm.... jig a 3/8 oz white tube or big white twister on deep water shoals and drop offs, ledges, saddles, tips of islands and I'm talking 30 feet to 50 feet. Load that canoe with a portable 80 buck sonar unit and Bob's yer uncle... they may be suspended in the thermocline if not on the bottom

worse case scenario, you will knock off some big deep water summer smallies....

There's one island on the east side that probably has a good drop off as it looks like it's close to the middle. I could definitely try that and a few spots in the middle. I've never used a dipsy diver, any ideas about trying one of those with a nice lure and paddling for more of a trolling method? The small mouth and large mouth in the lake I was just going to throw some spinners out... but if I can get into LT from a canoe, that would definitely be my bragging rights but more or less a fun learning experience. I've never had a Lake Trout pull me back to camp before and never much liked paddling anyhow. The fish in that area are probably less contaminated than the stuff around the GTA and I could probably cook them up over the open fire. As to your question, yes, Silent Lake camp grounds near Bancroft. Thanks for the helpful comments.

Also, anyone try bouncing big William’s Wobblers off the bottom of smallish type deep water lakes?

Hey a question from a noob: How do you find deep water shoals, drop offs, ledges and saddles?

I think I can find islands all right.

Thanks.

Cheers.

Hey RiverStevens,

I have fished Silent Lake numerous times.

They have photocopies of a rough depth chart at the canoe launch - make sure to pick one of those up. The lake gets deep, at its deepest about 70ft.

A portable depth finder and canoe would go a long way in helping you get lake trout in August. In September as the water begins to cool and they prepare to spawn, they will be shallow too.

There's great bass fishing in that lake for both smallies and largemouth if you fish the little bays at the right time of day. Mid-day go to the shaded bays. I like to use frogs during the day and worms as it gets dark - there is a slot for the lakers and most of the lakers you'll catch in there are in the release slot - but you can make an excellent tasting meal of the smaller bass if you like white meat.

I was near there yesterday and the only reason I didn't make a stop is because of all of the rain - it's a gem of a park.

Bass or lakers?

For lakers, were you out in a canoe? Did you use a portable fish finder? What bait were you using?
