So I decided to hit the lake yesterday afternoon for an hour. The weather was not in anysense cooperating to fish. 20+ winds and whitecaps. I eneded up catching one smallmouth 3.2 lbs. Looked at it and said that's dinner (kept 2 fish this year). Packed up and drove back to the docks. On the way back to my trailer fish with me, a neighbor told me a group went out last weekend and kept 3, they said they were loaded with eggs. Sure enough, cleaning my supper I also found a belly of eggs. Couldn't help but feel a little guilty for taking this breeding female. Can anyone else confirm a second spawning season for smb? Anyone seen or heard of this? I have some photos of the fish and the eggs but can't add them from my mobile. I could post them later if anyone is interested.

I've never herd of it !?!? Was her stomach full of eggs so was her body cavity full ??

I have a pair of macaw cichlids in my fish tank and do to the warm water of the tropical temps they bread every 6weeks I wonder if bass do the same ( multiple spawns )????

Ps any of you with aquariums that want some juvenile macaw cichlids I have plenty to give away ImageUploadedByTapatalk1378573760.467659.jpg

Many fish fill up with eggs, many months before their spawning season. These smallmouth are most likely full of eggs for their spawn in the spring. I remember catching perch when ice fishing, that were loaded up with eggs.

Ware the eggs loose or in skeen
They were in a pouch if that's what you mean by skein. I've only heard that term a few times unsure of what it means.

Ya it looks like clear membrane on one side and the eggs are exposed on the other and will release from the skein to be loose when they are ready to spawn ..... If they were in the skein the that would be normal as some fish take a long time for the eggs to mature

Thanks a lot man pretty informative. I just heard from a few old guys up here that sometimes there could be a double spawn some years as water temps rise in the spring and drop during the fall. Interesting subject this is, might have to cruise some shallows and see if I can spot any nests later in the year.

I have caught bass mid summer with egg-roe in them as well, I just assumed they did not spawn for some odd reason.

As for a second spawning season in fall. perhaps, bass could be evolving in that water body to have a 2nd spawn or maybe as

Giuga10
said maybe they start this early getting there eggs ready for spring.

And yes I have also caught perch in the winter right full of egg-roe, this Very Very common for perch, since they spawn right after ice out, and most record perch are caught in later winter early spring WITH the roe in them, its adds weight and make the perch a trophy.

Generally Bass spawn until late spring that's why the season doesnt open til the forth Sat in June.
Can't shed anymore light on this other than it's been a weird year weather wise.

Alfie.
