SmartOut Ontario - android app for outdoorsmen

Hi everybody.

I've created a smart phone app (Android only) to help with fishing and hunting seasons and maps. Basically it has:

- Map of Fisheries Management Zones (FMZ)
- Fishing Seasons by Zone (FMZ)
- Additional Fishing Opportunities (locations displayed on the map where known)
- Exceptions to zone regulations (locations displayed on the map where known)
- Map of Wildlife Management Units (WMU)
- Hunting seasons by game category (Migratory Birds, Deer e.t.c.)
- Hunting seasons by WMU - all seasons for all game in a given WMU

Long click anywhere on the map allows to open seasons for this location. Hunting and fishing seasons are presented in familiar format, as in official regulation summaries, but at the same time much easier to look up. Ontario residents hunting seasons are shown by default (can be changed to non-residents in Settings).

The app is about 10 MB download (from Google Play) and it's free! :) Check it out - maybe you will find it useful.

make sure you have a disclaimer in there that the onus is on the user to make sure the regulations are up to date and confirm that they're in the right are.

You dont want to expose yourself to needless liability. Also for the end user.. Don't solely rely on an app to tell you. Know the rules also..

I know that defence would not stand up in court b/c an app said it was ok.....

I guess you did not try the app? :) Yes, thanks, I do have disclaimer, credits to gov-t for using their data e.t.c. e.t.c

By the way even MNRF own web app Fish-On-Line states in disclaimer that they do not guarantee the accuracy and are not responsible for anything when you use their software.

Oh boy.
Speaking for myself.
I'm not on this site to download apps.
On here for talking fishing and to learn new techniques .
Regs readily available on line or at sports stores.

Nope, not an Android user...

I am an android user, I will give a download soon and give you some feedback, sounds much easier than having to hop on the web each time or find a hard-copy...I am always amazed at the work people do to design apps for all kinds of things.

Added Sunday gun hunting map and .275 caliber map.

Do you have to be in service, or online (via wifi) to utilize the app?
About offline - hunting and fishing seasons (tables) will work offline 100%. The maps will show whatever was last viewed when connection was available and maybe some cashed areas. But if you zoom into some new area details will probably be missing, the base map will be blurry. Nevertheless you should be able to see your GPS location, click near it and see what WMU/FMZ you are in and look up the seasons.

That is awesome, thank you. I am definitely going to try out the app.

wow this is a pretty amazing app! I have been downloading the pdf files of the regulations to my phone up until now, this is going to be so much easier. It even has all of the additional opportunities categorized by species.

Satellite tracker for where the fish are?
Anything is possible! :) But would not fishing become as boring as grocery shopping? ;)
