in other news, after hearing some rumours, and then talking to people in the know and seeing maps of places that are going to be posting no trespassing/no fishing signs on a certain east trib, i think my plans are changing

This year the opener has a special meaning to me.

My dad and I have been fishing and East Trib since I was about 4-5 years old. I am now 30, my dad is set to retire in June and shoulder surgery scheduled for in July. I am thinking this might be his last year of steelheading. As he has approached the age of 60, the excitement of going out for a full weekend (friday-Sunday) has faded, this is the first year in at least a decade that we wont be spending a night in a camper out there. My emotions are really mixed but I plan to make the best of the time we have this year. Fish or not, once I am with my old man I am sure memories will be made!

Amazing what surgeons are capable of now a days.
Odds are a quick recovery and he'll feel better than ever.
I've seen guys in their late 80's Still walking the rivers .
As far as weekend camping I'm with your dad on that one. Day trips and my own bed at home.
Of course you'll do the driving junior. Lol

Well I just got off the phone with him
conversation took a really suprizing turn.

"Hey boy, what you up to" - Dad
"Ugh you know, just thinking about this steelie opener. Uncle robbie called he is comming up from Miami again. Are you sure your up for that drive 4 times?"-me
"Well what are the options? If you are thinking about staying out there you know there is only so much I can help with" - dad
"I dont want to make you uncomfortable or make you stay out there. I am kinda preparing this in my mind as the last time we can go full swing with your shoulder the way it is. Ive seen the difference since 2012,13,14 &15" - me
"you calling me old? Get the trailer, ill see you out there Friday night boy"-Dad

Haha, lit a fire under his arse. Good times

Never under estimate the old timers. They'll make you eat your words. My dad is 66 and he doesn't fish that much anymore but when I take him out he'll flex that arch for me to see. I get a good laugh out of it but in the end I can tell that he's happy to be on the river fishing again.

Bittersweet. You're lucky to have had a great fishing buddy for so long.

Could not have said it any better.

Few years ago it used to be a trio - my dad, his brother in law and myself. My uncle past away suddenly in 2003 took a few years for both my dad and I to wrap our heads around being back at the river without him.

Father son bonding is always something special, have a great one!

Plan on exploring waters around my home. Would be just fantastic landing a few fish and going back to your spot knowing that no one will be there to take it lol. I'll go to the more well known tribs the week after.

Thanks Flandogg, something I am hoping my now 20month old and I can share as he gets older.

Had my shoulder done a couple of years ago, pretty major. I asked the doc (former Leaf surgeon) will it be close to 100%? he told me 98% of the people get back to 98%... Tell dad it's very important to go to physio and do the exercises. It's difficult at first and a long recovery as it's got more movement than any joint in the body, kind of imagine a golf ball sitting on a tee held in by tendons and muscles. Good thing is in the summer he can go shirtless. He'll be back, just might have to take up two handed casting...

as for opener- I stay away from the craziness and go a couple of days later. Score some brownie points with the wife and do some chores, kind of a credit for later. Have fun out there

Thanks Coldfeet, ill be sure to tell him of this. I think one of the key factors in our shared uncertainty about the procedure is that we both don't know anyone else who has gone thru it. So its more a fear of the un-known. The doctors we speak to all say the same $hit- "its hard to predict the outcome, as everyone heals differently" which really hinders his confidence in this going on.

None the less, I left home this morning car is fully packed, picking up an uncle from the airport @ 4:30pm then headed to pick up the trailer and out!

My Plan?

West Trib - B.W.O, Tanned Caddis and beads out the ass...

If you just thought of a porn clip, you've already skunked.
