Spring Trout Fishing

Hey Guys,

As winter's end is approaching, I assume were all getting the itch to get back on the water in some warmer weather.

Last summer was my first year fly fishing, so i'm still extremely new. I was curious on what everyone's preferences were in regards to flys in the early trout season. I know I can make a quick google search, but i like to hear what some peoples preferences were as it sometimes deviates away from the typical flys that are suggested.

On top of that I learned to fish with dry flys mostly before nymphs, so I believe the early trout season is a good opportunity for me to get better at my nymph fishing. Suggestions on nymphs for the end of April and beginning of may would be awesome!!

What staffman said. I usually hit up some specks on opener and small beadhead prince nymphs are my good to always. Hell I even throw them in big size for smallies once they open. They just always produce for me.

If your are in the area of Drift Outfitters in Toronto or Grand River Outfitters in Fergus you should stop in and talk to the guys about flies that are working during that time period. Otherwise there are a number of nymphs that could work. One of my favorites is a pheasant tail nymph. Good luck.

Opener I caught most on leech pattern. it didn't matter what color, black, olive, purple. stingers and buggers worked well too.

I'm in the Niagara area right now, but my home town is Cambridge. Planning on heading up to Fergus at some point so i will for sure make a visit there.

Thanks for the suggestions on flys. How do you guys nymph fish? I'm going to be hitting smaller streams and have been researching. I think ill try indicator fishing to start out, but have seen other types such as tight line nymph fishing? Im not sure if thats what its called.

all nymph patterns will work well. egg patterns, buggers, san jaun worms after a rain

I think what you're referring to is called "high sticking". I started nymphing last yr and Im hooked. Nothing like a nice brownie smashing your fly on a tight line! Works great on lake o tribs and the grand. Invest in a nymphing rod, you will luv it!

I don't use a sinking tip so I barely use indicators when nymphing...I do have a couple home made indicators for certain pools...I love fishing without indicators...when your line starts stretching straight....set that hook.
