Steelhead hook size

There seems to be a wide variance in hook sizes that steelheaders use to catch fish. This survey should be interesting.

Depends on the style of steelhead hook. Some 8s in one style are smaller than 12s in another style and brand. I generally use 8 to 12 redwing sabretooth or daiichi (daiichi only on steel, I find the wire too thin for chinnies)

Excellent topic for all. Years ago, I had been using a #10, and only recently was told it's way too big. Now I'm using a 12 or less. I think the general consensus is clear water smaller hook, but what size exactly? Dirty water you can get away with a larger hook, then again what size. I think I'd use 12 for clear and 10 for dirty, that sound good?

4 - 12. Some of my flies have larger hooks. In clear water if I am drifting bait, plastics or using beads... the hooks are generally 8 or 10's. In dirty water, I bring out the 6's. I used to run 12 and smaller but realized there is no need for small hooks that bend and break ( I put lots of pressure on fish ).

very true luke not all brands are the same size. my go to is daiichi size 8 or 10

Case and point grub. I think I was the one that said it to you when we were fishing clear conditions. That 10 you were using was noticeably bigger than the 8 I had on.

Yup you did and you were right. I caught my first steel on the smaller #10 hook. I now have #16 just in case of super clear water. And like FD said there's no standard hook size between the makers. They all need to be consistent.........lol.

i generally use the 10-12 eagle claws with the offset, the offset works well when stringing on trout worms to give a nice little bend in the body of the worm

I use 14s and 12s. And I switch between red and grey. Maybe if I put something bigger on the darn chubs won't be able to wrap their lips around it ha ha ha

12-14 kamasan sedge for the east for bags and plastics.

Size 6-8 raven octopus strong for beads.

Size 4-6 raven octopus strong for big water/flows.

I use size 10 or 8 kamasan but go 12 if its gin.

I find myself using larger hooks these days, the gamakatsu octopus 4,6 and 8, and I think that using a larger hook give me more hook ups. I do get a good laugh when I look at the 5/0 hooks for bass and then look at a #12 hook for steel!

For roe and beads I use 10 to 16's, depending on the conditions. For dew worms I use # 4 or 6 bait holders.

Size 10 raven for all conditions now, used to run 12-14 daichi but found it uneccessary and would often have fish spit the hook... 10 seems to be perfect for me.
