My buddies and I occasionally play a game we like to call 'Orgo-fishing'. Pretty much you show up at a lake or river with no bait, just hooks, weights, and whatever else you need for bait fishing, and you have to catch fish using whatever you can find in the water, or around the area. It's super fun because you can watch eachother try and catch minnows with bare hands, hunt for crayfish, or even put a random bug you find in hopes of catching a lunker. It's also a great excuse to drink beer :p

I challenged my dad today to a game or orgo-fishing today at our cabin on the grand, and I was actually really surprised by how much two baits we used produced high numbers of large fish.

The first were dobson fly larvae, knows as hellgrammites. I've worked with them during university, and in shallow rocky water, you can usually find them between rocks. They bite pretty hard though. My dad caught about 4 of them, and landed some nice sized bass, each within 2-5 minutes of casting. All the bass were roughly 2lbs, which surprised me personally because hellgrammites are about 3cms long.

The second, and most surprising to me, were freshwater clams. I popped two of these open and used the meat on a dropshot rig, and caught nearly 12 catfish, all around 4lbs. In the grand however, catching catfish these size isn't exactly extraordinary. What is however, is the fact that I caught a 7lb bass using clam meat, the beast just swallowed the whole thing, including the hook!

Goes to show, sometimes bait comes in the weirdest places!

*Also, slightly unrelated, but does anyone know if carp eat clams? I almost pulled in a fairly large carp, but it managed to break my line (it was rather worn) I'm just pondering still if it was a fluke, or if carp would eat them.

Wow, I wonder if the upcoming rain/thunderstorm, coupled with the very dry July, had the fish on a feeding frenzy today.

I don't know what the results were at the bass derby this year - but I bet you would have won 2 grand with that one.
