i'm a n00b to flyfishing... so here's a novice question.

ever use anything other than a fly for flyfishing?

I'm thinking of imitation frogs, live bait, etc.

I never have.i have never had the need to the fly works just as well but I guess you could but they can make frogs out of deer hair

Nor have I. However, as previously mentioned, there seem to be tons of patterns out there that imitate what is tyipcally used as bait (i.e. worms, frogs, minnows, or crawfish). I've recently read a few articles showing some fantastic looking frog flies. I've attached a link with a pretty neat one, which shows you how to tie the pattern step by step. There are some pretty realistic looking patterns out there as well! The frog patterns that I have seen range from poppers to dry flies, so the world is your oyster!

Whichever you decide to choose, good luck!

Tight lines,

Cody

There are lots of flies like the one MadocFlyGuy posted a link to... and the work quite well. I've been using similar frog patterns for a few years now with wild success. Just keep in mind you'll need a heavier setup for the heavier flies.

Not a stupid question at all. There is all kinds of different patterns available. I have a friend who fly rods for bass with small poppers. Watch this:

Reminds me of a funny thins I read somewhere: This girl new to Yoga asks her trainer "Can I practice Yoga by listening to Rock music", the reply is obvious "NO you cann't", and the girl responds "But I could! I did it yesterday at home and it felt great!"

I am not a fly fisherman but in my own style have tried things that seem odd and often have had better results. I would try everything and see what works best, rather than sticking to the usuals.

See this guy, catching bass using a fly gear, and plastic frogs. One of the best videos I have seen

Don Gapen invented the Muddler Minnow to imitate Sculpin Minnows & catch Coasters (Brook Trout) in the Nipigon River in 1936 minnow imatations are pretty common!

There are flies made to imitate many things. I personally have flies that imitate frogs, crayfish and mice. The frogs and crayfish work well for bass and pike will hit the frogs. The mice I used for large brookies in Nfld and caught some real trophies in the 5 lb range.
I also recall an episode of a fishing show with Mark Krupa were he used mouse imitations for brookies. I don't remember where he was fishing.
Popping bugs can be fished on a fly rod as seen in that video, and besides bass they are great for panfish.
As for live bait, I have fished a worm on a fly rod with good success when they aren't hitting traditional flies.

Alfie.

If you can TIE IT .... then FLY IT!

Great to see you using the UNLIMITED DIVERSITIES available.
You can just about catch anything on a fly rod.

Just be confident and make it happen!

Good luck.
