I've got the oluma aventa, paired with an 10.5' streamside im-8 steelhead edition rod, love it! except for the cork handle, its kinda meh.

for line, i went with 20lb fly line backing, 10lb mono main, then whatever sized leader suits the situation.

everyone has their own preference as to what lines to use and its all personal choices, all that really matters is leader size and how you present the bait to the fish

Now .. if its a high vis mono line as the main, does that go through the float and the leader after...

Again it depends, some people dont mind having a hi vis line under water however my self and I would say the majority of steelheaders would tie a shot line.

Your basic setup this way would consist of a 2-3 pieces of surgical tubing on your hi vis mainline (where you attach your float), then a barrel swivel or surgeons know to a similar pound test rated section of mono- this is the area where you will put your shot pattern, this owuld be followed by another barrel swivel or surgeons knot to your leader that can range from 8inches all the way to 24 inches

anyone reading this thread and looking for a centerpin can make use of this pricing error.. since they clearly have no idea.

TCP 450, $119.00 + tax.

It's a shame they put so much grease in it though.. i need to take care of that, but it fought like a champ yesterday against the boots. Loved it. startup isn't too bad out of the box, but like i said, needs degreasing.

Anyway, Paul, another option for setting up your line:

Dacron backing
I spooled 12 pound trilene as main line
i put the surgical tubing/float and shots on the main line
Barrel swivel
16-24" 8lb or 6lb fluro for leader

End of the day, tie a few different rigs and see what works best for you. I honestly don't know if it makes any difference, but i'm sure someone will weigh in and tell me otherwise.

mono as backing depending on how it was spun on by hand or machine, if by machine could warp your spool, mono line has stretch which is a bad thing to use as backing, shoulda just went with some cheap dacron or even kite string. if you run hi-viz, you will probably need a shot line, go with low viz and just run your bobber, split shots and then leader.

personally, i've never run a shot line, i always go float, shot, tiny @ss barrel swivel, 10inch leader to hook, and if i have to, i will put a small split or two on my leader, some people will cringe at that idea, but to each their own

Can you explain to me why mono is a bad idea for a backing... I cant for the life of me figure out why

My main is mono, no backing. straight up. I know it's a b*tch to spool when changing lines. (15lb for salmon) 8lb for steel. That's the only reason I would use a backing.

Thats what I was thinking about but youd have to be torquing on it pretty hard to warp a spool. Ive personally never had an issue with that so Im fine with the mono backer

streamside best 100-130 bucks you'll spend on a float rod, soft tip but also enough backbone for salmon and large steelhead. and lifetime over the counter warranty, which cant be beat.
Are you sure of this? I've seen 2 and 5 year warranties for these rods. Also their website has no warranty information.

they must have changed it, it used to be lifetime over the counter warranty, probably people taking advantage of it, so they changed their policy, best to call Jos at angling outfitters to find out what the warranty is like now on those rods.
