So myself and Willie (RiverRuns) hit The Forks yesterday at first light honestly the most beautiful piece of river I've ever been on in my fishing career and surely a new favourite to me.

IR4J gave me some info on the area what to use and what fish are in the area sadly no big fish where active during the day but we missed a decent looking bow in the morning that missed the fly upon a take, was pretty disappointed lol.

The bulk of the fish we caught where in the 4-6" range still fun to say the least and caught my first ever native Atlantic Salmon on a muddler amazing looking fish.

This surely is a piece of river that we will be hitting lots of in the future, tons of amazing looking runs that could hold some amazing fish and the nature and scenery is just overwhelming so if no decent fish are caught your still immersed with what's going on around you.

Willie having some technical difficulties haha.

I was there yesterday as well. I was there all alone in the morning and seen a toque wearing fisherman on my way out. It was a good day. A few nice ones in the mix including a nice 17" brown and a 18" resident rainbow. Plus the normal smaller mix of browns, rainbows and Atlantics. Was a beautiful morning but sure got hot mid morning.

Hey Jdean that was possibly me in the toque
i was there yesterday and today.
always get lots of fish in those areas.

and kit glad you enjoyed it bro, thats like my home. very close to me.
sad to see you guys didnt get into any big ones. they are there. but you gotta know the specific spots.
they arent apparant from looking at the surface but theres lots of channels between rock that hold big ones

nice fish and post!

When I got it I assumed it was a brown but after looking online the short nose and big eyes looks like an Atlantic. Yeah some do have spots. And wish I would of known you where there. Could of showed us around haha.

yea just did a bit of reading myself loooks like youre right, and that means ive been catching them without even knowing lol. always assumed they are trout

Ya I know where you were. I got my days mixed up. Was there on Wednesday. Everyday is a blur when you are on holidays

thanks!

i screamed like a little girl after i got it in the net... it's a miracle i kept it out of the downed branches

Nice fish. Was that you that pulled in behind me this morning as I was heading out?

Awesome fish all around! Forks are definitely fun.

For those who know the forks well, what's the most productive flies currently?

I was there with the family hiking today. Saw a few ponds with amazing Lilly pads and tons of frogs. Gonna try them for some bass soon.

@shawarma. keep in mind this is all my opinion..

right now the most productive thing you could toss is a green/brown bugger. thats for the bigger browns. black if the waters cloudy

youll get tons of little guys and the odd decent sized one on any dry that even slightly resembles whatever mayfly and/or caddis is currently hatching. brooks browns bows and atlantics. since most of the water is faster moving then a lot of rivers, they dont really have too much time to examine your fly. if you know what i mean..

i find the bigger fish prefer a more steady food source rather then focusing on what may or may not be on the surface. they tend to rely more heavily on subsurface high protein food unlike the smaller guys who will just smack anything that moves. if you are finding there no fish rising and the bugger just aint getting any action, fall back to a pheasant tail nymph/something similiar (other nymphs work too but the pheasant tail works best for me)

you can observe this behavior yourself. sit there and watch a pool, see all the little fish going nuts on the surface but the bigger brown/bow in the same pool is just sitting in the feeding lane moving very slightly left or right to grab things floating by underwater rather then the surface.

i know most of this stuff is common knowledge but im sure it can help someone

the hatch charts are fairly accurate and good to follow for a basic guideline of what to bring with you, but nothing beats observation. comparing this year to last year, all the hatches are delayed. so keep that in mind.

anyways i havent met anybody who can go there and guarantee big browns every time but those thing above have gotten me my fair share :)
