hi im not a pro at fishing, im going up to my friends cottage near hailburton and in the lake they have s/m mouth bass and walleye. what would you think is the best lures and bait to use???? and some tips would really help alot.thanks

Not sure what lake you're at, but Rapalas are a good starter. Jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits are also good.

If you dont have a large inventory of tackle, its hard to beat mother nature! Id go with worms and leaches. You can catch ALL species with these lil babies!
Either on bottom with a jighead or suspended under a float...usually it doesnt matter.

Worms here man.

Put a worm on, with 3-4 heavy split a foot up from it. Pitch it in, draw up the slack and wait. Works for Cat and Steurgeon too. Only works in sand. Load up a tip bobber otherwise.

Ive had luck with red devils and Little Cleo bronze and red combination.

for bass i usually use scented worms or salamanders(gulp or yum)and a fair size hook, then when dusk hits i switch to a jitterbug(top water lure)

I found this lure to out perform the Jitter bug as you can get it right into the thickest weed patch and never get snagged up.

Used to use the Bug a lot until I was shown this baby, Next time you're thinking Jitter bug give this a try!

Cool I lost 3 jitterbugs last year, will try these I think I saw them in the heddon section at le baron.

Thx

You can never go wrong with Blue Fox's chartruese colour(green/orange) tipped with a worm for walleye, and as far as bass go, I like to use a suspending bait, find a nice weed patch and work the outside edge with a fast retrieve and then if the bass are not active slow it down and do a stop and go technique. Usually within seconds of stopping somethings going to smash the plug. I also reccomend trying a jughead and leech, let it hit the bottom and bring it up 2 feet, just let the leech give off its natural action and wait for any pressure on your line then set the hook, I have had walleye hit so lightly that if i didnt pull up i never would have known they were on.
Good luck buddy and dont go paying a ton for leechs get a soup can and throw some scrap meats(raw) chicken insides work great in the can cover the top and poke a screwdriver threw the can about a dozen times. Leave it over night at a rocky locating close to shore and the next day you should have a tons if they're in the lake. But only use them at the lake you got them out of or you could cross contaminate something accidently.

If you don't want to spend alot of money on lures then worms are the way to go. 2.50 per dozen at some bait shops.
just use a longer chunk of you are targeting bigger fish. don't need to do much just let it sit on the bottom and the stinky worm will attract the fish. I've caught 2lb bass on an one inch piece of worm haha.

Why do people buy worms unless your not able to go out the night before, but for the $2.50 you spend on 12 worms you could get 50 worms in an hour if you go out at night, around 10pm best after a couple hours of darkness take a flashlight thats not too bright, as light can scare them back in the hole. Walk around and look I have caught tons of worms sometimes 100+ on a good spot of grass, schools and parks are great as the lawn is cut short. Back home the golf course would let us go out on it at night as the worms were leaving ruts on the course and we would get 1000's a night and sell them to our local baitshop. Just thought i would put that out their, if you not paying for water sprinkle a little on the spot before you go out and you will have even better luck.
On another note has anyone ever tried using electricit to bring worms to the surface, using one of those corkscrew things that you put in the ground and attach your dogs leash to the attaching booster cables and a car battery too?
I read online and saw some pics of litteraly 1000's at a time surfacing right out of the ground and it did not kill them. That would be nice eh, fill a couple beds with worms for the season,
Chris

Straight up I would rather spend the night before going over all my gear than chasing worms to save 2.50.

I lose more $ that that each and every trip, the brother's nick is SNAG HAPPY!

for the smallies, use a 3/8oz spinnerbait, in a white color. those are aggressive fish up there and u should hit them all day with that. for the walleye, get a couple packs of twistertail grubs. 2-3" in white, white/chartruese, and black. get a couple lead jigheads, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 oz will cover all ur needs up there. other baits would be crankbaits, and tube jigs.

What I would do, is visit the nearest tackle or bait shop and ask what the most popular lures and baits are and in what colours. I would try to have some kind of assortment of different things to try; some crankbaits to cover alot of water and then some live bait if you need to fish slower if the bite is more difficult.

common baits you must have would be jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, some sort of top water bait, and a bag of senkos :D

Their is only one more thing I think can be added to this topic without repeating other posts numerous times. Do some research on the lake and find out what kind of bait fish are their, is their any crawfish, leeches? by doing this you find out what the fish are potentially feeding off and you can load up accordingly. I spent a week up north and found a lake with leech's/frogs galor. I caught everything from pike, bass, and even walleye in the day time using a from off a bobber. weird but its the easyestthings that can make a day of fishing amazing,
Chris

For me theres three must haves for smallmouth fishing: Spinnerbait (probably has at least some charteuse in it), Jerkbait (X-Rap or something along those lines), Lipless Crankbait. I've caught more smallies on these lures than any others combined.

Ya that would be a good selection Billspipes,
Has anyone tried the new gulp's that can be recharged in the juice, that 4" minnows are amazing caught walleye and smally's on them, all were released but the bait itself works great their super tuff, and after using them they get kinda skinny and after a couple min's in the juice their right back to new shape. Great bait all around and I highly reccommed them, their not exactly cheap but you can use to same one all day if its not bitten off.
Chris

So I picked up my first bag of gulp minnows. Can't say I was right impressed!
They getting pricy might as well buy the real thing no?

And what was that bucket of similar product going for 20bux the fool tried to sell me, you guys are on about it dipping in the bucket to recent etc. Worth the 20bux?

i would take up some xrap y rapala , a few spinner baits neon green and a white one, and a small wallydiver. good luck and if those arent working rig a live minnow and im sure youll catch something.
