youre amped up.. stoked on landing.. and have media to show for it!

You can't wait to get home and get on OFF to show the boys!

GOOD ON YA FOR GETTING THAT PIKE DUDE!!! Dont let this guy harshen your buzz.

Im almost scared to post pictures anymore. It seems to be getting worse and worse when ever anyone posts media. Someone is going to harp on you for something. I thought we are supposed to be a community? We are all on a team, or at least it SHOULD feel like it. When you score with a beauty like that you should be able to celebrate, not get pooped on.

Good on ya for giving it to someone so it wasn't a waste. Keep em coming dude!!!

x3

That's exactly what is happening. It sad.

:) You're welcome. We're all on here to learn.

If planning on C&R, gilling a fish is a no no. Pike can be handled like any othet fish. One hand around the tail and the other supporting the belly. If you can reach to gill the fish you can reach to tail it.

Respectfully disagree - Pike & Musky are definitely different. Grabbing one of these by the tail first, especially larger ones can turn into an experience not soon forgotten. They're pretty resilient, and if handled properly as illustrated they'll survive no problem. (You're just handling by the gill plate)

Just bring a huge gaff and sink it deep into the side of the fish and give it to someone to eat...

No one will bitch about if you could have saved it or not.

Must be winternet....

I see that this fish could have been landed better. Wearing out a small pike in order to handle it isn't the greatest idea. Off a ledge like that, get it close, grab your line with your one hand, guide it to your other and gently grab the fish. Better yet, carry a net. Joel52 has made a good point, but there is NO NEED to grab a small pike like that. Just pick it up behind the head. IMO, you shouldn't be using that hold on a pike until around the 30" mark, as it's just not necessary.

But it wasn't horrific or blatantly harmful. But, if there are pike in the area, you should have your tools with you. Within a few seconds you could have easily cut the hooks and released the fish. Or kept the fish yourself and enjoyed it, either or. Then you could have replaced the treble on the spoon.

That being said, it's not a brutal handling of the fish or anything, no need for everyone to get all sensitive IMO.

Nice catch!

This year I put my boat in a lake filled with pike. Dont laugh but I landed exactly 70 pike this year ranging from 20" to 39". At first I started grabbing them by the tail, but that just wasnt going to work cause they would spaze out. Then I used to put my hand in its gills like I was holding up a trophy and getting my picture taken with it, but after the first couple my fingers started to get cut up. Every week I would go into work with fresh cuts to my fingers. When I was out with my brother he asked me what I was doing when I was holding it up by its gills. It damages the fish plus also damages your fingers. All he told me to do is grab her right behind the head and lift her up. Im a pretty small guy, but I was able to even grab a 32" pike by the head. Also doing it this way you are able to take the hook out a lot easier. Thats my two cents and thanks for listening to one of my many stories.

We learn as we go, that's a nice size pike Salmo. We each have our own technique, Even the best (technique) can cause death to a fish. You may handle it the right way but the pike has other things in mind. It might retaliate or just fight it's way to the death. When I was starting to hunt for pike, I made a lot of mistakes that might have harmed them (but haven't killed one) And has been researching all over on how to handle them the right way. Pike are not really the fish i'm into but they seem to be there when you fish for them so why not? In fact I bought a book on how to catch and handle pikes. Out of hundreds of pages on that book, one thing that really helped me in harnessing pike with the help of OFF people of course......BARBLESS hooks. you don't even need a net for this...but you do need needle nose pliers.

Dude, if you got stories, you gotta tell.

I am curious about this because I have never fished with barbless hooks but do you land less fish?

FishingNoob, why is your avatar pic different when I'm viewing on my BB than on my laptop. The BB one is all fancy, it says ~OFF's finest~ or something like that, the laptop one is plain. Is my laptop that old that it can't detect certain effects now? I know it can't connect to certain WiFi connections...
