Toronto Islands Large Mouth Bass Summer Report
Tuesday July 15, 2008
Toronto Islands - Centre Islands
Start: 8:30 - Finish: 16:30
Weather: 22c / wind west 7 km/hr / pressure 101.95(rising)kpa
Sunny with few clouds.
Water Visibility: clear
Group: Tangledline, David Kearney, Rob
Fish Caught: 5 Large Mouth Bass, 1 Rock Bass, 1 Sunfish
Catch and Release: All Fish
Times of Catches: all between 10:00 and 11:30
Map:

Green dots mark the areas the 7 fish were caught.(two fishing holes - 7 fish)
red marks the reference point of the regatta course grandstand.
Fishing Strategy:
Fish were not biting.
Used both small and large Spinner baits of all colours to attract fish.
Tried Spinners, Spoons, Rapalas of all sizes and colours and different styles of retrievals.....no bites but lured in curious large mouth bass and sunfish. Fish gathered and watched the lures being retrieved.
The Bait that fish were caught with....Worms....(thanks David Kearney for bringing Worms)
Equipment:
Rods: Shakespeare Ugly Stick and a vintage Blanchard Algonquin T10-980 Trolling Rod
Line: Berkley Trilene xl extra smooth 10lb.
Setup: (simple hook) Gamakatsu octopus #2 by Normark
no weights, no bobbers....clear water so we used polarised sunglasses to make visual contact with fish as they attacked the worms....thus allowing us the best opportunity to set hook.
-fish did not bite with leaders, bobbers, or weights attached to lines...only stripped to naked hook and worm...clear water visibility made this tricky...fish backed away from lines with bobbers.
-cast worms on hooks 10 feet out to waiting "curious" fish.
-allow worm to sink to bottom.
-dance worm slowly up from bottom.
-fish struck worms 6inch to 1 foot off bottom ussually below or in front of them not above them.
Note: we were casting our shadows into the water(sun behind us) fish were watching us and knew we were there.

there are more fish photos but i can not seem to add them to this report....
note: nets were not used and catch and release policy followed.
Other info gathered:
although David Kearney and Tangleline have not seen or caught pike in this area for two weeks now, i was informed by another person fishing that he caught pike this week 100 to 150 feet from the accessible shoreline in the inner channels using a tractor tire style fishing raft with paddles....we observed him on this day getting skunked fishing for bass and pike....location is key in these channels, so is bait, so is time of day.

Torontonians: for close to home fishing give the islands a try.

Kick ass report dude, I am still realing in agony from that day...you two guys!!! arrgg, Just joking...nice report, and nice fish, can`t wait to get back there...hey I got an idea...quit your job and we will fish full time...I am almost there anyways. LOL!!

Great report !! I like the fact that you realized they get spooked easily in that ultra-clear blue water down there. Good going. You really have to match the hatch, earlier this spring when I went down a couple times, all the pike guys were using perch colored & green/orange HJs & xraps with success, and with HJs, the heavier leads tend to weigh down these lures, so half the time you're going leaderless anyways.

Nice toronto island Bass, would love to take my baot there but I think I need a harbour license....

The beauty of it all is you don`t need a boat on the island...althought it would be a bonus, you can get these badboys from the shore...and I am sure there is bigger to be had...can`t wait for wakestock to be done, I will be back next week for the bass action.

nice bass you got there !

i've always wanted to ask though, have you ever found it awkward when youre hauling all this gear onto the ferry and find other people staring at you?

i wanted to go once, but i thought it would be weird and awkward so i gave up on it.

I don't know what YOU carry but when I visit,,, it's just one rod + backpack.

When people stare at you, you stare back. and give the finger.
No just kidding, don't do that.

Ya when I go as well it`s one rod, and a back pack with just some of my stuff...you don`t always hafta lug around everything you own...especially if you are targeting a certain kind of fish...keep it simple. Ohh and who cares what people think...when I am on the streetcar going to the ferry at 7:00 in the morning, and everyone is in there suits and looking at me, it`s cause they wish they could do that! SUCKERS!!

success! nice!

i've never noticed any funny stares on the ferry. sometimes people will stop to ask what type of fish we're looking to catch and wish us good luck. maybe it depends on the time of day you go?

haha alright, someones gotta take me later on this year maybe in sept or something when i start school at ocad.
