Hello all!
I took the kids to Bellwood Lake shore fishing on Saturday morning and it was great! They had a riot catching at least 2 dozen small Brown Bullheads and even landed 2 bass the largest being aroung 2.5 pounds (nothing to brag about but for a 5 year old it was like catching Moby Dick!).
It was great too see a LOT of younger folks (teenagers and families with small kids) either fishing from boat or shore and appreciating the sport of fishing. I recently re-engaged with the sport after a 20 year hiatus and it has been a blast.
We were mainly fishing under the bridge on Wellington 26 which was a bit of a popular spot as there were quite a few folks out there.
We also tried Kelso Conservation area later in the day where we caught quite a few panfish.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for spots where I can bring the kids in the west part of the GTA for shore fishing? Not looking to steal anyone's honey holes, just some suggestions where I can bring the kids with a dozen worms and keep busy.

Thanks

Sounds like you are doing something right Kinger. The kids are getting fish and I don't even frown upon a 2.5 lb Bass  .
I can't really help you with spots for kids as most of my fishing is done in waders and not from shore.
I'm sure someone with kids may speak up soon, but get into the Ont Fishing Reports Section and GTA Urban Shore Fishing areas of the forum and I'm sure you will also find lots of info there.

Alfie.

That's awesome that you take your kids fishing. They might have alot of fun if you take them to a pier that goes out into lake ontario. At about the halfway point of the pier, cast as far out as you can. Use a 1/2 or 3/4 oz sliding sinker and put it in your main line. Before you go buy a package of pre-tied hooks on a leader about 8 inches or so long and get a package of swivel hooks. Then tie the swivel hook onto your main line, while the sliding sinker is on it. Then unhook the swivel and put a leader on. Then put half a worm on the hook and cast away! Just leave it out there in the bottom and you should get into some big drum pretty quickly. Depending on the time of year you may get trout, catfish, carp, or bass on it too. Make sure your kids hold the rod tight though when a big drum take their bait.

EDIT: If you find a small pond, try fishing there. They will likely get lots of sunfish which can be alot of fun

Thanks for the replies Alfie and Catfish! I'm gonna try Ferry Lake in Acton this evening and will let you know how it works out. I will certainly look around the GTA Urban Shore Fishing area as for the foreseeable furture my fishing will be done by shore (at least until I can talk the wife into letting me buy a boat! HAHA).
@Catfish - I'm gonna try the pier suggestion this weekend down in Oakville. Worse case scenario is that my youngest will have a good time checking out all the yachts

Happy fishing everyone

Fairy Lake is full of panfish that's for sure. I've tried it once and caught a small pike. It's free to launch so that's why I checked it out but as I've read, it's not very good for bass and pike. They are very few and far between. But great place for the panfish.

I've sent you a PM, took the wee one to a few of these spots this year... she enjoys it when she actually catches a fish...
I can fish for weeks without a fish and still be happy... but at 8 years old different story :)

@ Rhymobot - Tried Ferry Lake last night and it was a total bust but there has to be something out there as I saw quite a few guys fishing both from shore and from boat. I will be trying it again as it is close by to Milton.

@BearInTheWoods - thanks for the info and I will you posted

I'm like you...as long as I got a line in the water all is right with the world

I always take my two oldest boys (7&5) to pinehurst in Paris. Bring a dozen leeches and they will catch sunfish and bass until their arms are sore! I love seeing young kids being taught the sport.

Heartlake in brampton-great for kids.

Island lake, great shore fishing for kids and adults!
