I casually fish every spring at a pond for small - large sized rainbows and every summer in Algonquin back lakes for bass and sometimes walleye.... This is probably a dumb question but is there a decently priced rod & reel setup that can land these species without buying multiple rods??
Tnx

And to narrow it down a bit more i'm looking for a baitcasting rod and real setup since I'm just casting small lightweight baits throughout the pond I trout fish at.

You would probably be good with a shimano citica or curado if you've got the extra doh ( they're good at casting light lures). As for a rod the browning six rivers 8'6" M trigger rods are amazing for the price. Personally if i were you though i'd go with a spinning outfit. They are much better at casting smaller lures and presentations, plus theres a lot more variety to choose from.

Heres a few links for the rod and reels:

Ive Tried Baitcaster With Light Lures......

Ive Only Come Up With One Conclusion Which May Or May Not Agree With Everybody BUT
- Baitcaster Work Better With Medium/Heavy Lures
- Once Mastered(bird nest free) More Precision On Casting and Hardly Any Line Twist
- Cast Long Distances

Spinning reels work just as well as a baitcaster to a certain degree.
- Cant Cast As Far As Baitcasters
- The Produce Line Twist From Time To Time
- Handle Light/Med/Heavy Lures

Its Like Driving A Car, Do You Want A Manual Transmission Or And Automatic? :)

Just Get A Medium 7' Rod

With any baitcaster that gives you options.( some have gear ratio(from an old shimano baitcaster) options and/or a flip'n thing)

Cheers,

I prefer a spin cast combo medium with fast action 6'6", works great for me for both bass and trout. I have a few spinc ast set ups and want a bait cast too to add to my collection. i saw in bass pro flyer they have a tourney special combo regular $120 on sale for $69.94. Sale end feb 13th. As my first baitcast I think i may pick this up to get used to it. Not sure if it is any good but the price it right.

Hope this helps

I personally prefer spining rods especially for light lures like 1/32oz spinners. One combo that has always been a great one for me is the Abu Garcia specialist medium light 6'6" spinning rod. Ive caught bass up to 6 pounds on it and she has never let me down. $79.99 is the price tag, but i buy mine in the fall when they go on sale at canadian tire for $39.99. I usually buy a new combo every 3 years.(i am pretty bad for not greasing gears, and i use the reels for icefishing which is very hard on them)
The specialist is my go to rod for big rainbow trout in the spring and walleye in the summer. Depending on the size of bass and cover you are fishing it might be a little light spooled with 8 pound test.

If your mind is set on a bait caster then you should consider using a clear casting bubble filled with water, and positioned a couple of feet above any small lure you're using for trout. The casting bubble should give you enough extra weight to throw light lures. Casting bubbles can be found at Canadian Tire stores and likely at Walmart as well.

Thanks guys for the input.... I was just wondering because I for sure need to buy a new reel.... My rod Is okay for now but I need a new one of them too. The reel I have now my uncle gave to me but it is so loaded with dust the drag doesn't work anymore on it when I tried bass fishing last summer. The biggest I landed in weeds with 8 lb test was a 2 and a half pounder.... So I thought I may as well try getting a baitcaster to try them nifty little things out. ill keep looking I got till some time to decide before I go for trout so any more ideas would be great helpers. Ill look at some of the stuff posted I. Response though.
Tnx

I was looking at the bass pro site for baitcasters and rod setups and there doesn't seem to be a lot of cheap left handed baitcasters is there? Cheap=around $100

If you have never used a baitcast reel i would advise you get a spinning setup. I have used a few baitcasting setups and after a few birdnests with line tangled everywhere i decided that i wont buy one...granted this was a few years ago, but they are not easy to use. The only reason i would get a baitcaster is if i was after huge fish that required heavy line since spinning setups dont handle heavy line very well.(20lb+ line for pike or muskie, or 6lb+ bass in thick thick cover)
If you do decide to get a baitcast reel, make sure to buy/bring plenty of line until you get good at it!!

My favorite multi purpose setup is a Shimano Spirex and 2 pc 7' BPS bionic blade. I have used it for walleye, smallies, pike and perch. Casting or trolling... if I could only bring 1 rod with me, that would be my choice. It's kind of like my 5 iron, middle of the bag. I think I could play a round of golf with a 5 iron...
;-)

Thanks Joel I'll consider that piece of information. I'd probably only be using it for rainbows, largemouths, smallies, walleye and maybe the occasional pike.
