I prefer to use the bead by itself, with the hook bare... but I'm lazy so I will bait the hook with anything while the bead is still rigged. Haven't noticed any differences, especially in big water.

lol ive been doing the same thing lately, no success to show for it yet as I was skunked on the geen last weekend. Ill start the morning with no bead and switch between worms and roe and then as the day progresses i'll add a bead to the leader and mix it up between just the bead, bead with worm and bead with roe. Too lazy to take the bead off so I just call it an attractor lol. I may have to re-evaluate if I get skunked again next time though

I have heard about this but never really spent much time investigating it. It sounds alot like using single egg yarn flies but as it was pointed out in one of the posts the hard plastic helps get the bait down and the hook doesn't get stuck on bottom as easily.

It may sound like blasphemy but I would curious to try this while nymphing for steelhead on my fly rod. Often times I am just using yarn flies in single egg patterns on a dead drift anyways.

i stumbled across this method last year when i had first started fishing with beads. only difference is i put the bead a little further up my leader.
i've had good luck on this kind of rig and im a firm believer in using the bead as an "attractor" and typically will use it for a good number of drifts each outing. for late fall/winter steel, i always use one of the bigger, 10mm beads in an annoying colour like chart. or cerise

Maybe a bit of scent can help as well. On opener I put scent on the bead and it immediately worked within 2 drifts.

How do you add scent? Most of the beads I've seen are plastic 'craft' beads from Michaels or similar. They wouldn't absorb any scent. What kind of scent are you using?

(I have found this discussion quite informative so far. Thx, guys, for your comments.

It was one of those oil scents that look like vaseline. It's hard to get that stuff off lol.
