Hey,

I have recently dived into world of lures! Normally I use live bait, but thought I should start using lures for a change. I bought a Koppers Live Target Hollow Body Frog. I was searching youtube to find some videos on how to use the frog and the term "walking the dog" always comes up. Anyone know what "walking the dog" means? Thanks for the help. I must sound like a noob :)

Walking the dog is creating an action that goes side to side and is produced by giving the rod a quick twitch and then a pause, and repeating this pattern. The lure goes sharply to the right and then will swing sharply to the left with this action.

Just to give u an idea.....
I used to do that technique with the skitter walk a while ago:

But I found that the frogs are even easier to walk them like that.....just take your time to practice

To walk the dog, you do have to twitch your rods on a taught line, but your twitches have to come from the left to the right.

I find the easiest way to learn a good lure action is to reel in fast (your line must be tight on the twitches)

The twitch, left down, right up and repeat

If you twitch to the same side, youll end up with a odd action on he bait that doesnt look very pretty, lol, but I'm sure it would still catch the odd fish.

walking the dog is pain to do done mostly with heddon zara spook i found it easyer with braided line to do some reasonimg005.jpg

Zara spooks & Skitter walks are awesome lures for bass and pike. They're the type commonly used to walk the dog. Other types of topwaters have different ways of attracting fish, like if they have a metal lip it splashes water.

lol nobody's born sounding like an expert, and sounding like a noob (and always being one) is the best way to learn =D

You dove into a world of lures and expenses LOL. Be careful in that pool! If you're fishing from shore you might get your heavier ones snagged since I notice they tend to run deeper and/or catch a few things. Anyway you don't have to worry about that with the frog :p

i use power pro on all my rods that suffix is better from what i hear 20 pounds=6 diam

Suffix 832 handles abit better and casts a bit better. But honestly, there is not too much difference. I like both. But I'm quickly becoming a fan of Tuffline Duracast braid

Won't the fish see the braid?

Usually isn't an issue. I know it's popular belief, and it def. happens with certain fish (trout), but bass and even moreso, pike, don't really give a darn.

The "walk the dog" presentation is a reaction approach, and fish are generally right there to attack it, or there rising for mid depth or bottom to smash the lure. The lure is moving quickly and the fish don't have much time to "inspect" the lure, so it's more of a knee jerk reaction.

Just as an example, the report I posted from my kids fishing this week, they were fishing 20-13 Feet of water with hi vis powerpro yellow braid in clear water. They still got bit, no problem. And thats walleye, known for being finnicky beyond all belief, lol

Another thing I dont think was mentioned.

Braid is the best for this presentation IMO, and one really good reason is that it floats. Fluoro is super dense, and sinks like a rock, and mono sinks pretty fast too. That really effects the presentation in a bad way
