What Rod & Reel to buy

Looking for a combo Rod & Reel for ice fishing, for crappie, perch.

What do you recommend?
- brand ?
- action: ultra-light, light, medium?

I was about to get "Ugly Stik GX2 Ice Fishing Rod and Reel Combos",
BUT
It bends at an abrupt right angle ,rather than a smooth continuous bend that blends into the power section of the rod

Hey brother not sure what budget your working with but I absolutely love my Fenwick rods. They sell for about 22 bucks and you can get any reel you want but I use Shimano siennas for ice fishing. They have a sweet drag for Lakers.

That's what I got:
Panfish - Abu Garcia® Veritas™ 2.0 Ice Combo [Ultra Light]
Whitefish/Laker - Berkley Lightning Ice Spinning Rod [Medium] + Shimano Sienna FD Spinning Reel SN2500FDC

For ultra sensitivity I have got some spring bobbers.

Solid choices. I truly am not a huge fan of Shimano products but their spinning reels are great and the sienna is a great ice fishing reel. I don't use it for anything else.

I recently ordered Jason Mitchell species specific combos from Marine General in Duluth.

The action is specific to the target species. So for Crappie you get he Panfish rod and for Perch you get the Perch rod and so forth. Keep this in mind as I'm sure that other manufacturers offer similar systems.

I've seen the Jason Mitchell line in many "pro" videos so I thought I'd give in, spend the money ($50.00) and hope they are as nice as they seem.

Not sure I agree. If I'm fishing for Crappie with micro jigs and spoons and I'm using a thick heavy rod it's not going to do me any good. While that rod might be perfect for power fishing herring harnesses and 4" spoons to catch Lakers and Pike I want the sensitivity and fast action-parabolic tip of an ultra-light for the Crappie's paper thin mouth and tendency to slurp at the bait rather than engulph it as a Laker would.

I would say sensitivity and rod action would be the two most important considerations when selecting an ice rod.

I would have gone with a med action, easier to set the hook.

There are some new rods on the market with "integrated ultra sensitive tips" (three rods being the "Tickle Stick" by 13 Fishing, "The Snitch" By No. 8 Fishing and the St Croix Avid Ice Rods)

I use a Med Light action No. 8 "Snitch" for whitefish, walleye and perch some times but find it is still slightly too stiff when the fish are pressured or biting lightly, so I am excited for my Super Ultra Light "Tickle Stick" that is coming from the states. I will let you know how I find them!

I'm going to upgrade next year and will be getting a medium with a fast tip. This will be for jigging and dead sticking perch, will add a spring bopper. AS for real, not to sure yet but likely shimano.
