Hi my friends wanted to know what type of rod to use for salmon fishing, hes going up north on a camping trip with his family , so asked me, but i really don;t know, so im just posting it up here for any answers, so what rod would you guys recommend for salmon fishing????? thanks

I use a 8ft medium action rod, you need something a bit tough and the longer the better, these are strong fish and not easy to reel in on a 6foot walleye rod, I would use 14lb monofiliment line if you have a rod this big, should be a good match for sure. Hope he has good luck,
Chris

a proper reel with a large line capacity and a very STRONG and RELIABLE drag system is the most important factor. u can land any fish on any rod if u play it rite. but i would go with an 8'6-9' medium or med/hvy rod. the quantum coldwater series for salmon and steelhead are great rods at a good price. match that with a quality reel, spooled with 20-30lb braid. to a 6-10lb mono or florocarbon leader, and he should do just fine!

I think I gotta disagree with this one.....sorry.
I use a 5" centre pin reel with No Drag System and a 13 or 14' RiverRod. 6lb Test line and 5 Ib F/C leader. With the length of the rod, you can easily land a 15-20 lber without heavy line ect.
Let the rod do the work! (Mind you this set up is more for the bows but just shows you what can be done)

wow disspatcher, i can only imagine what that baby is worth, lol. A little more than my crappy car im sure, lol. I agree a rod can do all the work for you if you use it right, and i have seen guys i dont know how, but i have seen them reel in a salmon on a walmart special. It can be done.

well... this really all comes down to a personal preference!! lol. i have never used the center pin reels nor have i used a rod that long. just not my style i guess. i have no ambition to use one. they can be fun to land fish on though as i have seen ppl do. but i would think they are a little more complicated to use then a normal spinning outfit? i;m actually curious to know... dispatcher, care to enlighten me on the subject a bit more bud?

Ya i dont know much about them either, i do know that for the most part their expensive though. But are they more effort to reel in, or is it easyer to play the fish? I am interested in any info you have. Thanks
Chris

The choices that you have described are all correct. The difference comes in the application. If you are trolling for salmon, then a 8 to 10 ft rod would be a good choice. If you are fishing from shore on on a river then the 15ft rod would be more appropriate. So when you look at what kind of fish, you need to consider what type of fishing you are going to do.

You can definatly catch fish on any rod....just depends on how you play it out. The centre pin reel w/river rod is a little more expensive than some, a good starter package may run you 350-400. BUT...You can spend that on a shimano baitcaster and loomis 1 pc rod no problem. Do you need to spend the money..definatly not.

A centre pin is used when drifting bait along the river. The reel itself is what makes the difference when drifting with the current. It allows you to keep the line taught, no slack in the line wether it is up stream, downstream or right in front of you. Thus... with little to no slack in the line, a hook set is that much faster, reaction time is faster, and with the use of a 14' rod, you are picking up a lot of line and fast...thats when you will hear the whipping sound of the rod when a good set is done. Now using 6lb line, which IS a must when fishing bows...they are very smart and see heavy line from a mile away....this is also a reason for the centre pin, with no drag you control it yourself..
You can fish for anything with any type of set up, some just works better than others.

Check out this video, My cousin in Ireland is a fly fisherman,,targets eveything from pike to carp..on a fly rod!!!

Might be a little long, its a show on tv in the UK,..you can see all of the episodes on youtube.looks for alan hanna!

Nice thanks man great info, I have seen guys fishing this set up by the dam in Caledonia, and i did actually hear that whip you talked about.
I think im going to buy a cheap set up to try out this fall, or next spring. It looks like alot of fun and this guy was catching trout and walleye, so i guess anything is really reasonable to catch.
Thnx again for the info.
Chris
