what roe works

Thx everybody for those helpful responses, esp Blair with his diagram. So, as I understand it, you should leave the hook bare for a better hook set rather than put a single egg (rubber or real or
"rowan' :). Still I would think that if a smaller fish struck it you would end up foul hooking it? Why not have it closer, say 1"? Sorry for all the detailed questions---I may be a slow learner but I eventually get it

We all learn when someone asks the question. I need to know and appreciate all the details too. I'll try the beads next time I'm out.

The further the bead is from the hook the greater the chance of hooking the fish outside the mouth, conversely the closer the bead is to the hook the more out of the ordinary the presentation. My suggestion would be to experiment from 1"-2" and see what works best for you. Not getting any bites then move the bead further, or if you are hooking the fish on the outside of the mouth then move the bead closer.

NADO has it figured out correctly. You want the egg to appear natural and you don't want to be hooking the fish outside of the mouth or in the eye etc. and that is why you have to experiment with distance. I normally start with 1.5 inches and experiment from there. Putting a plastic egg on your hook defeats the reason for the setup. Sure it will catch fish ,but remember that in this case the trout bead is acting only as an attractor. The plastic bead on your hook would lessen your chances of hooking a fish that hit the trout bead first instead of your plastic bead.

try boiling single loose eggs till they get firm and let it sit out for a bit, u can hook em for single presentations

*SMILES*

Boiling does make them work for single presentations.
Hardens them up nicely. (then some people add food colouring or leave em "White")

Didnt mean in anyway to imply you were wrong.
It does however remove the scent. (And in the Kitchen .. OMG the smell!)

If you keep some of the "oozy goo" from the original Zip lock bag or Jar ... then you can let the boiled eggs re-absord some of that original scent.
