Be careful with the lawn casting.......I had a $500 lesson one day when I first began fly fishing. I was false casting on my in-laws front lawn. This is a large lawn and I was getting some long casts. My wife got me this rod and I had no clue how to fly fish. As I finished up and starting putting it away my wife comes outside and asks me to show her my casts. Eager to show her how well I was doing I start casting and end up doing some long casts when all of a sudden we both hear an explosion! Startled I jump and my fly line falls around me...It sounded like a gun shot. Thats what I thought it was at first. You do hear gunshots going off in some woods so itsn't uncommon but this was CLOSE. At this moment I hear a crinkling noise.....I turn around and look at my back windsheild of my sedan smash into peices! I was far enough from the vehicle but ended hitting the bottom corner of the back windsheild with the tinest dry fly. I didn't take it off to practice the cast.....I was a pure noob what can I say......The guys at the shop who installed it said that they couldn't belive that a tiny dry fly could smash a windsheild like that. They said that they have taken bats to a windsheild and it didn't smash like this. I still laugh at this whenever it is brought up. At least once a year. lol :)

i practice in the water--no grass ---only when necessary lol--but mostly in the river --like to learn where i will actually use it...
