Salmon's are different when they decide to fight. Be careful when using expensive lures. I caught a salmon with a hjsize 9 on its lip and a few earings(mepps) ion its tail...
No iv never gotten a hook open from a snag. Its either I pull it loose or I lose it. I use matzuo and mustad hooks, if that makes a difference.NADO said:Ive done it lots. Those little red daiichi hooks that are great for trout have been bent open by many salmon on the end of my line and even a few steelhead. Have you ever gotten a snag out by bending the hook open? Same idea here.
well if you want to get a hook bent to see what its like but perch hooks and catch some salmon they treat those hooks as if theyre paperclips and bend em straightusernamehere said:No iv never gotten a hook open from a snag. Iv only fished for salmon/trout a few times before, and so far, its either get the fish or line snaps. Never bent hooks.
But then again, I do use fairly big hooks on my lures, and its highly unlikely it will bend before my line snaps, or drag gives in.
ok dude my bad that was i typo i didnt see its 60lb powerpro ive got 2 baitcasters 1 saltwater which has 80 and 1 freshwater with 60 sorry but its still a bit heavy, and if you can get the fish in faster it puts less stress on the fish so it has a better chance of survivingrich_ace_G said:80lb. braid?! I can land that salmon in 1 minute...
Iv use size 8 panfish hooks on trouts and have yet to see them bend. Bending hooks happen when you set the drag too tight while using heavy line. I use relatively light lines and have my drag really light as well.ChasinTails said:well if you want to get a hook bent to see what its like but perch hooks and catch some salmon they treat those hooks as if theyre paperclips and bend em straight
horsing a fish in in a min can do major damage to its mouth depending on the hook you use. I tend to avoid this except in crowded conditions.ChasinTails said:ok dude my bad that was i typo i didnt see its 60lb powerpro ive got 2 baitcasters 1 saltwater which has 80 and 1 freshwater with 60 sorry but its still a bit heavy, and if you can get the fish in faster it puts less stress on the fish so it has a better chance of surviving
Not trying to argue as I keep an open mind when it comes to fishing. To each his own but I'm not sure if horsing a fish for the purpose of landing it quick is good. Do not under estimate these fish. I've witnessed rods broken, hooks bent and lures stolen.ChasinTails said:ok dude my bad that was i typo i didnt see its 60lb powerpro ive got 2 baitcasters 1 saltwater which has 80 and 1 freshwater with 60 sorry but its still a bit heavy, and if you can get the fish in faster it puts less stress on the fish so it has a better chance of surviving
i dont horse them in but i dont leave the drag at 1 pound and let the fish fight for an hour then try to revive it from a 9ft pierrich_ace_G said:Not trying to argue as I keep an open mind when it comes to fishing. lol i meant like use bad hooks on big strong fishusernamehere said:Iv use size 8 panfish hooks on trouts and have yet to see them bend. Bending hooks happen when you set the drag too tight while using heavy line. I use relatively light lines and have my drag really light as well.
If you use 60lb braided line with a perch hook, then ya, thats just asking for it

But uh.............60lb? wheres the fun in that
Depending on where you fish.usernamehere said:Ya, when you fish shoulder to shoulder, you need to bring the fish in quickly.
gotta try that with my shark rod lololol  :mrgreen:eric said:off topic reply - sorry
just youtube surf fishing montauk , wayyy too many videos about montauk.
montauk is seriously not for any beginner to fishing, not for faint of heart.
if your undergeared, you can get hurt, die, drown.
its probably one of the most extreme shore fishing you can do in north america.
for the lazy folk, heres a nice short vid showing bits of what montauk point is like.
nothing beats eating a 6-9ft wave in the face while fishing.

and heres a sample of conga lines at cape hatteras, north carolina. it gets veryyyy crowded there.
also cape hatteras is about 70 miles long,, yes SEVENTY miles of oceanfront beach to fish. google the map.
these pics are from 'the point'
im not a snagger if thats what your thinking, i usually dont use spoons or luresfloat^drifter said:rivers 10 to 12lb main with 8lb leader 13' float rod
pier 20 braid with 15lb leader 9'6 spinning rod
some of these set ups are sure very interesting. I've had many times a fish on with 20 guys fishing a spot. If there are ethics evolved people will remove their line out of the water and let u battle the fish or at least let u move the fish out the way. Usually when i see a guy with 80lb line and shark rod i think i know what hes thinking or i see him doing it. Just my experience.
not handicap accessible. if you mean those rocks.Icehut said:Any wheelchair access to the rocks off Montauk?
Saltwater fishing is the bomb, great lakes are a joke in comparison, thanks for those vids.
