When fishing for salmon from shore...

Salmon's are different when they decide to fight. Be careful when using expensive lures. I caught a salmon with a hjsize 9 on its lip and a few earings(mepps) ion its tail...

Ive done it lots. Those little red daiichi hooks that are great for trout have been bent open by many salmon on the end of my line and even a few steelhead. Have you ever gotten a snag out by bending the hook open? Same idea here.
No iv never gotten a hook open from a snag. Its either I pull it loose or I lose it. I use matzuo and mustad hooks, if that makes a difference.
Iv only fished for salmon/trout a few times before, and so far, its either get the fish or line snaps. Never bent hooks.
But then again, I do use fairly big hooks on my lures, and its highly unlikely it will bend before my line snaps, or drag gives in.

well if you want to get a hook bent to see what its like but perch hooks and catch some salmon they treat those hooks as if theyre paperclips and bend em straight

80lb. braid?! I can land that salmon in 1 minute...
ok dude my bad that was i typo i didnt see its 60lb powerpro ive got 2 baitcasters 1 saltwater which has 80 and 1 freshwater with 60 sorry but its still a bit heavy, and if you can get the fish in faster it puts less stress on the fish so it has a better chance of surviving

Iv use size 8 panfish hooks on trouts and have yet to see them bend. Bending hooks happen when you set the drag too tight while using heavy line. I use relatively light lines and have my drag really light as well.
If you use 60lb braided line with a perch hook, then ya, thats just asking for it :)

horsing a fish in in a min can do major damage to its mouth depending on the hook you use. I tend to avoid this except in crowded conditions.

But uh.............60lb? wheres the fun in that :p

Not trying to argue as I keep an open mind when it comes to fishing. To each his own but I'm not sure if horsing a fish for the purpose of landing it quick is good. Do not under estimate these fish. I've witnessed rods broken, hooks bent and lures stolen.

i dont horse them in but i dont leave the drag at 1 pound and let the fish fight for an hour then try to revive it from a 9ft pier

Ya, when you fish shoulder to shoulder, you need to bring the fish in quickly.
Depending on where you fish.

From what I have seen, fishing shoulder to shoulder with people the first call of fish on, most lines come out of the water. Kinda mutual respect. I wouldnt make the fish pay even more for people now being closer than ever. Still not worth horsing the fish out.

rivers 10 to 12lb main with 8lb leader 13' float rod
pier 20 braid with 15lb leader 9'6 spinning rod

some of these set ups are sure very interesting. I've had many times a fish on with 20 guys fishing a spot. If there are ethics evolved people will remove their line out of the water and let u battle the fish or at least let u move the fish out the way. Usually when i see a guy with 80lb line and shark rod i think i know what hes thinking or i see him doing it. Just my experience.

on topic- i by all means, not an expert in FW fishing. but i use 20lb sufix 832, tipped with 3' 20lb seaguar fluro leader.

good all around setup for any large body of water shore fishing in my opinion.
i use the same setup back home on the SW surf/bays.
can definitely handle fish up to 30-50lbs.

off topic- you canadians are just too polite.. . . . mutually reeling up lines to let people fight fish.. haha

if anyone ever has a chance to fish (surf fishing mecca) montauk point, new york.. youll learn how to do the shuffle, dance in conga lines (especially in north carolina), and just learning to move around peoples' lines lures and rods.

nobody will reel up for you especially when the run is hot. in fact, more people will start casting over your head.
its a sight to see when 20+ people are hooked up to big blues or stripers there.

spoon chucking on the piers I use a 9' light action ugly stick with a shimano solstace reel last year I used 20 lb braid initially but soon realized if u have a big enough spool and u fight the fish properly you don't need such heavy line I landed many fish on 8lb mono line as well so this year I switched it up I got about 40 yds of 20 lb spiderwire as backing and the rest is 15 lb mono I joined them using an Albright knot if anyone else has used the Albright knot for joining mono to braid how strong is it im kinda worried haven't used it yet. let me know pls I don't want to find out with a fish on the other end of the line.

As for fishing salmon in the rivers I don't as far as im concerned once they make it past the piers we should just let them die in peace. Besides for me there is no sport in fishing for them in a small pool with 30 other people no matter what setup your using. And last but not least I hate seeing the slaughter that happens in some of the rivers every year. If you are going to take the life of another animal or creature make good use of it and don't let die in vain please and thank you.

off topic reply - sorry

just youtube surf fishing montauk , wayyy too many videos about montauk.

montauk is seriously not for any beginner to fishing, not for faint of heart.
if your undergeared, you can get hurt, die, drown.
its probably one of the most extreme shore fishing you can do in north america.

for the lazy folk, heres a nice short vid showing bits of what montauk point is like.
nothing beats eating a 6-9ft wave in the face while fishing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcLsKqx-Jy8&hd=1

and heres a sample of conga lines at cape hatteras, north carolina. it gets veryyyy crowded there.
also cape hatteras is about 70 miles long,, yes SEVENTY miles of oceanfront beach to fish. google the map.
these pics are from 'the point'

Any wheelchair access to the rocks off Montauk?

Saltwater fishing is the bomb, great lakes are a joke in comparison, thanks for those vids.

not handicap accessible. if you mean those rocks.

the lighthouse itself, and points of interests/overlooks/town, definitely
the beaches on either side, kinda/somewhat.

the only canadian sw fishing that is remotely -- fun . in my opinion would be bluefin tuna off prince edward island. spud

Now a guy in a wheelchair, down in the blasting surf, wedged between the rocks...

That guy would be FUGGIN' HARDCORE!

The Chuck Norris of surfcasters.

Respec.

lol
thankx for posting those vids eric...entertaining...
nice to see there's more than 1 way to dance in a conga line...lol
