Which action casts better?

I've been trying to research how rod action affects casting distance and after both a lot of reading and some limited testing am still totally confused.

All I can gather is that:

Fast action: Casts more accurately but only works well distance-wise with heavier tackle. The side benefit is better sensitivity and hook-setting power.

Slow action: Casts farther in general, especially with lighter tackle but less accuracy. The side-benefit is gentler entry of the lure into the water so less likely to spook skittish fish.

Moderate action: Lies somewhere between the 2.

So, for my Salmon/Steelhead shore-fishing, I'm looking for a moderate-fast rod as a good balance between casting distance, accuracy and hook setting power. I suspect I will need a separate rod for Trout fishing, possibly a Moderate action Light or Ultralight rod.

How far off am I?

Fast action off the pier sounds good and a longer moderate action for the river also sounds good, so I think you nailed it.
