Your Biggest/Most Memorable Catch

My most memorable fish is probably my first salmon that came off a pier back in the fall of 2007. I saw it as a great achievement back then.

One that stands out is catching my first Atlantic salmon on my first cast---wasn't even a proper cast really, just a half-baked effort while I was fiddling with my knapsack. Went the next 2 days w/o so much as as a rise, though!
The fish of a thousand casts it is called. I have friends on the east coast and in Newfie and have caught many Atlantics out there Knuguy. They are amazing, how many fish jump when hooked and clear the water by 6 ft, I shitte you not.
I have however fished pools out there where you could see 20 or 30 Salmon all day long and not had a rise. Finicky yes but when hooked one of the most memorable fish you will ever get.

Alfie.

i would have to say my first and second salmon late last year and my first trout early last year  the trout was on a bass baitcaster with 60lb braid. so me and my dad were on our way back from pike fishing with no luck so we stopped by a local creek and said lets take a couple cast's so i chucked a mr twister behind a rock and while i was untangling my birdsnest i fel a huge thum and i was thinking it was a sucker so i said let it b im untangling my line and to my surprise it was a 4lb trout. i landed it but as my dad handed it to me for a pic i dropped it  . now for my salmon second salmon. me my dad and sis were heading out to my grandparents and it was salmon season so my sister brought her trout ul spinning rod with 4lb line and said let me try if we stop at the creek me and my dad laughing said ok. at the creek water level was up 200% easy and like chocolate milk my sister said no way am i fishing here even tough we could see like 2 dozen fins in the water so i said lemme try so i casted and well i hooked one, little did i know i was in for a huge fight. after about 15 mins and fight from hell by both the fish and the current i landed a 37lber wow. now for my first salmon( sorry for the wonky order) i was fishing in porthope the day after my trip to florida it was cold and raining and i wanted to go home, i had like 2 coffes and i wanted to sleep. at about 1am i got a knock knock knok on my 6'6 m rod and the fight was on full open water with a fresh salmon. the fight lasted about 5 mins and let me tell you my arms were done for, thanks to my 25lber, that night my dad landed 1 huge 30+lber and the same for my grandpa    pics below, in the pic with my dad that nasty bugger was biting me lol

Yes, I've seen them jump on a line, but also in the pool 15 ft in front of me! A bit frustrating when you can't even get a rise!

Christmas eve of 2012...

One of the last fishing days for my local creek so pops and I head down for some steelheading. As we approach the hill down to the creek we notice there is not a soul to be seen and that the creek is 95% covered in ice.

Great, lets move down to our productive pool the water is deeper and wider there perhaps its fishable. We soon realize the normal shore of the creek has become completely flooded due to ice jams at every bend in our little heaven. We tugboat our way through the frozen river up to our waists in spots that used to be dry ground... I am hardly optimistic.

Approaching our go to pool we see it is much like the rest of the creek... frozen. We take a few drifts through a 5 foot stretch of open water. I get my line caught up in the ice edges and break it off. Rigging up in freezing cold winter morning I am now wondering why I choose to do the thing I do.

One more shot at finding fishable water lets move down to the one other pool I can think of that might be open and holding fish. We trudge on acting as ice breakers until we find a path that is still open. Moving quicker through the brush I can see our pool just up a head...

Its mostly open water but there are three other anglers huddled over it taking turns drifting. Hmmmm perhaps I can drift the back edge of it I wonder as I approach with a smile.

I ask if they are okay with me taking the back end of the pool as it tapers into a narrow section of the creek (4-5ft wide and half covered in ice), they are fine with me taking the back end. Pops does some talking with them and we are soon all happily drifting around the ice flows and frozen banks extending most of the way across the creek. I am fishing what I believe is the least ideal section of the pool. It isn't even part of the pool, more the creek downstream of the pool.

Drift 10 feet... cast. Repeat.

About 3-4 casts in I notice my float wobble, hardly noticeable... Did I bump bottom I wonder? Cast again same thing in the same spot... must be a branch under there I think. One more drift through that section to be sure but this time when i see the float hold i set the hook just to be sure...

And suddenly I no longer wonder why I do the things I do.

Land a beautiful steelhead with a silver pink stripe down its side... perfection.

My biggest was a 22 pound common carp and my most memorable was a 10 pound steelhead salmon from lake Erie. That steelhead was the first fish (besides panfish and small bass) that I ever caught and what really got me interested in the sport. That was about 4 years ago! (Keep in mind I am still only 16) Cant wait to experience all the upcoming adventues and memories up the road! Tight lines boys!
