been fishing since I was in my diapers literally so I don't really remember my first fish it was probably a bass cuz the lake that we fished was full of them and still is, we used real frogs and worms most likely and a couple other early memories are catching a 5 lb largie with a little 5 inch largie stuck in his throat and I remember watching my father clean the fish then when my grandmother chopped the head off to cook it the mouth kept opening and closing for about 5 mins. when I was about 4 or 5 we went pike fishing in Orillia and my dad got a hook in his finger lmfao couldn't forget that one. And last but not least one of my favourite memories from childhood was catching frogs to go fishing. awwwwww the good ole days.

The first fish I caught I believe was a tilapia on a stick with string with hook/meat attatched. However, the first fish I caught in Ontario was a Round Goby in the lower credit on a worms/bobber setup. I figure the first non-invasive species I caught in Ontario was probably a sunfish though.

Not my first fish but you reminded me of some good ole days Mr B. At about 6 or 7 years we used to camp near Wellington every year. My brother and I used to stand on this bridge and watch all these huge dark shadows dart out of the weed-beds and grab Sunfish and Perch. Dogfish and Pike we were told. An old fella who lived there told us about this Pike that he called " Ole One Eye ' for obvious reasons. According to the old guy this fish had been there since pre-historic times  . It always broke off anyone who hooked it.
My brother and I made it our goal to catch " Ole One Eye." We would spend all day by the river filling a pail with Perch, and then spend the hours at dusk trying to catch the legendary fish on our cut Perch bait, not illegal at the time. We caught many Dogfish/Bowfin and small Pike. One night I hooked onto something, it was huge. At one point it erupted from the water and my line snapped. I swear the profile I saw was missing one eye. Dad estimated it was a 12-15lb Pike. He didn't notice the missing eye when it jumped.
I wonder if " Ole One Eye " still prowls those waters another 40 years later?

Alfie.

Either a Rock Bass or Sunfish on a Pocket Fisherman, bait would have been bacon or Marshmallow just off Triple Bay Road in Victoria Harbour/Port McNicol

my first fish was a carp that was about 6lbs. I caught it at the caledonia dam with my dad and his fishing buddies. I was about 6 years old. we used corn as bait...

There's carp in there? Well there would be but it doesn't seem like the ideal habitat for carp.

yeah, idk if they are still there, but this was my first catch. my second catch was a catfish that was about 24".

Around 4-5 yrs old, was either a sunfish or little rock bass on a pocket fisherman, with a bob, hook and worm.

I don't know exactly how old, perhaps 6 or 7 years old. Most likely a rock bass or sunfish as my first fish. I do remember camping at pigeon lake and catching a pretty nice LMB on a live grass hopper. I thought that was so cool. Later I picked up a CT combo spin rod and would fish in port perry a lot while camping with my family. I caught a lot of bass, perch, blue gill and walleye back then. When not camping I would take the street car to high park and fish the pond with my buddy. I loved those sunny care free days fishing high park and just sitting on the grass. I caught many LMB in there. My boys' first fish were rainbow trout at 3 years old. One a 14" and the other a 20" while ice fishing. I have photos of them both with me and the fish. Surely I will never forget it. They will have pictures of their first catch. Too cool.

that's what most of us are missing...pictures of our first catch, if anybody has some you should post them or maybe start a new thread
I'm still trying to figure out how to get pics from my iphone onto my posts here. Now you are asking me to get my 40 year old "Polaroid Instamatics" on here too???

Alfie.

Sunfish or perch for sure, I remember when I was about 4 hooking into what was about a 12-13" perch, I couldn't believe the size, at least 3 feet :D
