Holding a fifth from the gill plates doesn't harm the fish !! Your just assuming they are sticking there fingers into the gills

there are much much much better and more attractive ways to hold a fish for a picture that don't risk touching gills

Some people aren't as fussy as you are and do it like the pros on TV !! I see it all the time !! As long as they aren't jamming there fingers in the gills why get bent out of shape about it

4 pic, that hen is loaded. thanks for releasing her.
I wanted to scale her so bad but when she was that big and that fat, there was no way I was even going to try milking or scaling her. Quick photo and back in ASAP.

the reason why you're seeing so many beat up fish is because they are on the gravel and spawning, do not fish the flats!, im also disappointed to see the number of fish being held by the gills
i never hold fish by the gills, i try telling people on the water when i see them do it

I tried the hand over the eyes thing on the weekend, and it calmed that steelie down instantly. Long enough to get a good grasp on the tail and then just scooped it up. Easy.

ya and when a 8 lb fish is hanging from its head it gets superpowers and a batmobile. I'd like to see you hold a human by the mouth and see how he/she feels
your burying a hook in its mouth and dragging it in by the mouth.... and that doesn't hurt the fish ??

PK...that was awesome at the end where you had to land it twice! Beauty fish!! Good on ya for releasing it! May it live to fight another day!

There are a couple of things about this thread:

1) It seems that a lot of people concerned with numbers. When did fishing become about keeping score. Too many people missing the point IMO.
'What was once a trout-cold, hard, spotted and beautiful-now becomes "number seven" ' - Thomas McGuane

2) There is blatant mishandling of fish. Fish laying bleeding on the ground, fish in the mud, fish in the grass, fish being held by the gills; all bad examples of how to properly handle a fish. I realize that these are hearty fish, they wouldn't be able to make this annual journey if they weren't, but lets remember that as river fishermen (and women) we are targeting these fish at their most vulnerable. I'm not some kind of bleeding heart activist, and I'm not trying to stir up any bs, I'm simply asking that we show a little respect to the amazing fish we chase, and that we set a good example for the new generation of steelheader that may be browsing this thread. Personally I love all things steelheading, and want to make sure that my children have the same opportunity to fall in love with these incredible creatures.

Maybe it's just me...because I tend to do the same thing...but could the lost fish be due to trying to horse them in...rather than tire them out? I know that I am bad for that...but that comes from running braid and hitting smallies and pike....horse them in...so that I can release them faster.
