Are we overdoing catch and release?

Ontario Fishing Forums

Help Support Ontario Fishing Forums:

There are some areas with certain species in north america where catch and keep of certain fish is actually beneficial to the fishery. These fisheries were usually stocked from the beginning and mismanaged from the beginning.

It's all about what species it is. There is no concern for Bass, Panfish, Pike ect.. But you also have to concider the Salmonid populations which almost half of it's species rely on stocking to maintain its population.

Consider Muskie and Sturgeon, back when the populations of these fish was huge Ontario had a commercial fishing industry for these fish and there was no worry about over fishing ect.. And now Sturgeon are closed all season and Muskie have been protected in some lakes.

Sorry if this has already been said in the write up, I didn't have the time to read the entire thing.

It's all about which species is being caught...

I guess in a put and take fishery catch and release won't matter, but in places like most of Ontario for example, it certainly does. The study on slot limits is interesting. I think the CRAA proposed something like that for rainbow trout once.

Indeed...

I live in Owen Sound and I know there are a lot of Salmon and Rainbow's still there but anyone I talk to say it is next to impossible to catch a 20 to 30 pounder the way you could a few year's back now it's 4 to 15 pounder's and that's about it.

The problem in Owen Sound is the Natives do not respect what's going on,and what's going on is the Ministry of Natural Resources used to stalk fish there because Owen Sound is really proud of the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular Fishing Derby and the reason why the MNR is not stalking Salmon or Rainbow is because the Natives in Owen Sound and close by Fished them Commercially and do not give a Penny back to the MNR to help restock the fish there.

It truly is a sad sight when you want to go fishing and when people have Net's strung out so far is so many places almost can't get out of the Harbour is truly is a sad day for the Angler.

I want to make it clear this I'm not a Native Indian Hater what I do Hate however is when I pay for something and work and pay Taxes and somebody else can come along and can rape my fishing grounds that's a problem for me when the MNR won't restock my fishing grounds and can you blame them when they know they are going to get raped again.

The new netting agreement sucks for sure There is also a protest going on in Owen sound tomorrow from what I hear.

Just as a follow up to my other post in this thread,a friend of mine was telling me the day of the protest a diver dove down to I think it's called Harrison Hole or something like that and it's the deepest spot in the Harbour or one of the deepest and the diver said the hole was filled with dead Salmon and I find this funny because that's right they string there Net's up in that area.

I know that I have heard people say that they have seen the Indian's bringing in there catch and have not seen any Salmon in there boat's and I have heard this from 4 people that I know fish Owen Sound Harbour all the time because they live right in Owen Sound or just outside Owen Sound,if this is true they should locked up they alway's moan about the White Man wrecking the earth and showing no respect for it but for them I guess a different story.

loogans come in all shapes sizes and colors its not just "the natives" fault, and this is also there culture they have been netting salmon for thousands of years its never gonna change lol and let em have the stupid nooks, just dont let me catch them down in the calidonia rez netting eyes!! :p

Just to add my 2 cents to this native thing.

I can say dont take a handful of natives and say the whole race is bad. I am not native but do agree with equal rights. Now imagine you are online complaining about some nets that take away your fishing. Going back a generation or 2, imagine your sitting at home and your lives are turned upside down my settlers who are now claiming your land. I can see why the gov't allows em to take from nature.

But lets say now I came on here and said I hate seeing Russians fish, they all use 30lbs line and treble hooks. I am sure I would have some emails from admin/mods.

I know from seeing and being around natives, they are taught to take from the land as they need. Not to be wasteful, heck they use every part of the fish for something from food to jewlery to dog food. Can most of us say the same?

I do not agree with nets being strung in harbours, but I dont agree with people comming online and openly saying blame a race bc I can't catch fish.

It doesn't make the natives bad in any way. There just needs to be tighter fishing regs for them IMO.

I don't think CnR is overdone. It's all a matter of choice. I don't eat fish a lot but I love to fish. I've had some good outings where I was catching more than 10 fish and every time I land...a part of me says to take it home and a part of me says to let it go. But then there's a part of me that says there's a good restaurant that will cook way better fish prepare it and put it in your plate and all you have to do is eat it. Like I said, not all anglers enjoy eating fish, they just enjoy catching them.

i dont think restaurant fish tastes nearly as good as freshly caught fish no matter who the cook is lol who knows how long the fish has been sitting in that kitchen or freezer. when it comes to harvesting fish, unless its a put and take fishery or simcoe perch, i take only what I can fit in my stomach that night lol i think everyone should do the same, its the guys with freezers full of fish that are ruining our fisheries.

I have yet to find an Ont restaurant that serves good fish!

redneck--agreed but its not really needed though--I mean we are the same people eating at mcdonalds and if its for the sake of having fish to fish in 20 years maybe c and r is the way to go...burgers sit under heat lamps for hours we still eat them like its our last day on earth.

gewfie newfie behind wilsons fly shop in Fergus--I had their fish and chips other other day---was so happy I ended up buying another reel...lol fantastic fish and a great view of the ole river.

Oh, I'm sure the fish we catch is amazing as it's fresh from water. but the added convenience that goes with fish from a restaurant is what makes me go there instead. My love for eating fish doesn't compare to my love for JUST catching them.
