Here I go again. Anything to improve my odds of catching.

The reviews are mixed on the BP site.

I've only tried Sparkle Scales and no difference, so I'd say it's a waste.

Majority of the time I don't use anything, just rely on the action of the lure.

What do you think of it? Are you using it or something better, or nothing at all? What's your fish story about the scent you used?

Thanks to all who respond.

I try the leeches the minnows and even that mini fry and minnows for panfish. And I have the spray

I personally think its a really good produce and for sure it does work.

When I starting fishing back in the summer of last year that's all I had with me a tub of 3" yellow and white minnows and my fishing rod. Of course there is some lucky involved when fishing from a dock that everyone else is at but I caught a walleye and lg mouth with it compared to everyone else fishing with other soft bait and worm that were standing beside me or on the other side.

I normally add them to jigs or just nose hook them and cast out both work fine

Since fall is coming I would say get some minnows for crappies or if your new or want to bring kids to fish panfish get the small jar. My girlfriend doesn't leave the house unless I bring it with us when we go fishing so it really does work.

I am a fan of scent.... experimented in a back bay near Parry Sound (family cottages) and it made/makes a diff in my opinion. Long boring "back bay" story, lol, a week of trials with non scented tubes vs scented, but it made a diff. Maybe the past 15 years I have a bottle somewhere and add scent every few casts, the Berkley stuff or whatever i grab (anise). I know freshwater drum pick up on it, channel cats for sure....

i dunno i now feel naked if i don't squirt it on every other cast... on my jig not my body  maybe a lil dab behind the ears wouldn't hurt either :D

I've heard that it's the main ingredient in some scents. Google making your own scents and bass seem to like anise and/or garlic flavoured.

Ha ha if you put it behind you ears I wonder what kind of women you'll attract with that.........lol.

I find with sent the fish hold on to the lure a lot longer (easier to tell if you have a fish or a snag).

"IF" you have the opportunity to use LOCAL LIVE BAIT.... it is always the BEST in my opinion.
Having said that, the SALTED PLASTICS and some scent additive do seem to have a "Higher percentage" of success.

No hugely difference, but enough to pay attention too.

*Remember, I personally limit my plastics to about 5 ... and given the choice .. will use other options.

Thats just me...

Simple things like:

Worm

Crayfish

ROE

Normal Rapala

Mepps

Come HIGHER in priority for me over plastics.

Time and place ... but I think they are OVER RATED!

lol

in my experience.....

gulp will outfish live bait in some situations.... more so in the replacement of worms...

PROS
-gobbies cant get gulp off you hook like worms... so your bait is in the water instead of rebaiting all the time....
-color options
-profile options
-cost... 1 X 3 inch gulp minnow is about 75 cents... and i can get 5-10 walleye on it... worms... your lucky to get 2 fish per worm....
-cleanliness... other then the smell... gulp is clean... no blood and guts on your boat... worm dirt spilling on your carpet...
- storage...dont have to keep gulp in the vegetable crisper of your wifes fridge...

CONS
- fish will not hold on quite as long as live bait... but as long as your quick with the hookset it doesnt matter...

as for replacing minnows.... i stick to the real thing.....

In my experience, the only fish i target with live bait are Walleye and Trout.

Targeting bass using livebait can turn into a "panfish headache".
Bass are often intermingled with many other non-target species that eat up your livebait faster than they do.
(with the exception of crayfish)

Otherwise, many different types of lures will prompt a strike from a fish better than livebait will.

ie: A pike will be attracted to a topwater presentation quicker than sniffing out a floated minnow (in my opinion)

Nothin beats drifting a worm for fresh steelies tho...
Or a simple minnow on a round-head white jighead in 12-18FOW in the spring for walleye...

in the warmwater season i use berkley realistix or lunker city fin-s fish in sizes 3-5 inch about 80% of the time catch all kinds with them. super glue them to the jig and they will last until a toothy critter cuts your line. if not jigging then i am using a yo zuri crystal minnow

GBD, I "discovered" Yo Zuri Minnows on a trip to Florida and I must say I love the tight wiggle and shallow running of some models... the red head/white body is a fave!!

Thanks for posting this! I think this helps a lot as you clearly outline the pros and cons for sent. Thanks!

My tackle box is looking for a new friend! ;-)

Might have to pick one up! Any particular size I should get?

i paid 20 bucks for my first yo-zuri about 10 years ago at PROLINE on jane st it was a topwater and caught me so many fish! i like the deep runners, for shallow water work i use husky jerks. these are my go to baits for fishing around 15-20 FOW got them for 5 bucks each

lol great pic!

I believe scents make a slight diffrence but more so then working, I dont think they spook the fish so I dont see much harm in using it anyway. Any way to improve my odds of hooking a fish are a way to go in my opnion. i've used the gulp worms and they last soo much longer then real ones and I get pretty much the same ammount of hits. Obviously nothing really beats the real thing but in terms of cost, $5 a jar vs $3.50 a dozen adds up quick if you fish often like I do
