Hey guys, I'm a new owner of the Aventa with bearings. So far, I've saved money but I'm not impressed with how it handles slow drifts because I have to manually pay line out. The drifts I'd like to fish are simply too slow for the reel to spin under its own power. Spinning the reel manually also isn't an option because it stops spinning.

In short, fast drifts, I also have to start the reel by hand to get a nice trotted drift before the drift is over. Is this normal?

Anyone else share this poor experience with the Aventa? It spins much better than the bushings model... but leaves much to be desired. Unless I'm simply not fishing it correctly. I'm using a thin pencil float, so perhaps this is why i'm not getting enough force to spin the reel.

I had the same problem with my Islander. Not all reels have this problem. You might get better performance if you upgrade the bearings through Bocca bearings.

Well my two reels will both roll out their guts with nothing more than line weight.

Put a BB split shot on the end of your line (nothing else, just the split shot), hold your rod at a 45 degree angle, is the split shot enough to start spinning the reel?

If not, check the reel closely at the gaps to make sure the reel isn't binding anywhere as it (tries) to spin.

What are the "gaps" lol

What did you end up doing with the Islander? Did anyone here ever try Bocca bearings before?

When I had one I had to do same sometimes in really slow water. Once you get it going tho it should continue to spin.

The speed I'm talking about is such that it stops itself after 5 or 6 seconds then I have to spin it manually again. The reel is loose enough that it spins itself if I hold it vertically, but then stops itself after a second when the handles balance.

I will try what Klamp suggested.

the worst that i've ever seen in a center pin is very slow start up but i've never seen one stop while it's going, to me that sounds like a manufacturer defect either in the bearings or in the reel itself.....why don't you just bring it back to where you bought it and exchange it or get a refund?

Right now I'm playing with it off the rod. If I nudge the handle slightly it will spin a quarter turn, and then stop, then spin backwards to where it started. Is that normal???!!!

that's not normal it sounds like something is off balance

I just took a look at the gap. It's not uniform all the way around, it's narrower on one side of the reel and wider on the other. I took a look at it from above, the spool is not level, it is riding higher on one side of the reel than the other.

does it matter where you start it? I mean if you start with the handles one above the other will it go back to that position or does it go back to a particular position each time?

It wants to go back to a particular position every time. It will spin on its own to return to that particular position.

i hate to say it but it sounds like the pin is bent

I'm uploading a video of the shitshow lol. This is no fun!

Now that I watch the video I can see just show awful it is...

Edit:

soooooo, now what? :p

i would probably bring it back to the store and get a new one or if you bought it used...well maybe give okuma a call and ask for the number of an authorized repair shop near you cause it doesn't sound like an easy fix :(

Yup, I bought it used and have the scammer's name and number...

Anyway, what about a replacement housing? If the pin is bent, the pin is in the housing? That might help? If the whole spool is warped... then no.
