I just got a rod, shakespeare ugly stik lite salmon/steelhead rod, with a abu garcia cardinal S. I bought it to use for salmon (with just a standard egg sinker and roe setup). and was wondering if it would be okay for these other 2 types of fishing (i just recently got into float fishing). it is rated for 5/8 lures, are these big enough? its just a bit smaller than 3/4

I have 20 lb braided line on with 6lb diameter. for float fishing I have 8lb leader and usually put a swivel and leave about 18 inches of leader.

Ugly stick is good for coarse fishing(rod stationery on one spot), too flexible to be used in casting and retrieving lures, especially fishing on faster moving water of bigger river system, one need a stiffer longer 9-13 foot rod with more backbone and more guide. Braided line will create Ice build up during winter, stick to mono line.

Float fishing might be temporary fine using Ugly stick. Rod just touch heavy due to fibreglass material added. For more finesse fishing, need solid Graphite stiffer but slimmer graphite shaft rod. My friend recently bought a 10.5 ft Fenwick for $85 tax inclusive .rod rated 6-12 lb, IM-7 graphite rod. 5 year warranty on it as well.

Your reel is fine!.

actually ugly stik and ugly stik lite are two different rods. the 9' ugly stik is too soft; i too have ugly stik lite 8-6 rod and its little bit stiff for float fishing, good for salmon pier casting and carp bottom bouncing.

Hey fishfight, did you take into account it being a ugly stik light? its not the standard one.

I've had some problems with icing on my braided line (but more so on the guides), the thing is I use braided for salmon and I don't like to waste money by changing line all the time.

Your point about it being too flimsy to throw lures, I think you might be right but have to find out for myself, it's rated for 5/8 ounce weight which is a decent sized lure. I think it'll be okay for chucking j13's, if not I have a 6'6 medium heavy spinning setup too.

Your friend got a good deal, now im thinking I should have spent a little extra, but then again I don't go for salmon/steelhead too often, though im starting to get hooked.

I took the setup float fishing today and caught my first ever steelhead, 9.5 lb male. I found it easy to float fish with (this is probably only because I tried floatfishing with the 6'6 MH rod I mentioned earlier, its all i had)

I'll try both rods out for chucking spoons next fall and see which is better.

efka- Carp bottom bouncing is pretty similar to the way I fish salmon which is mostly what I bought this rod for, so that's good news. Do you remember what your 8'6 rod is rated for? line wise? ideally i'd want something rated for 6 or 4lb test in a float rod is what you're saying?

you can always use smaller diameter line just be easy on the drag.

my rod is 15-20lbs.
