For those wanting to learn how to catch steelhead cheap, if I make it, just come over and I will explain my rig.

Essentially I use a $20 Shimano Canadian Tire reel, a 7' M rod rated 6 to 12 lb, with 6lb Trilene line, and $0.01 hooks from Dollarama (90 for a buck).

The hooks are tough enough for 30lb chinooks, the reel is excellent though spray it with WD40 if you ever happen to drop it in the water or after extensive use, and a 7' rod is plenty for steelhead.

If you can afford the more expensive gear then go for it, most of my fishing budgets goes towards ga$ and all of the expenses that go with driving.

Worms and roe, the top trout baits, are free or next to free

A 7ft rod is pretty much useless at the geen.. I think most would agree on that.

I have fished near the dam with it and done well, I fish the Maitland often with it and never have any problems.

A longer rod is handy for such a wide river but it's doable with a 7fter!

@ Salmo, I might have been thinking the first time we crossed paths, we were minus the angry Irishman, you were walking back n forth in the tunnel and told us "You have to get em all stirred up, it's a well known strategy" I'm not entirely sure you were serious but the only guys i know who say that are snagglers like the roofers that flash the pools at night with big spotlights trying to get fish to run into their trebs on my home river. I think that rock incident was nonsense and gave him poop for it. At that time I was just happy to see you going somewhere else and I wasn't about to do anything to make you come back. Fish get spooked then settle down again. The less their spooked the better though. Cancer's a bitch man. It's good that you have the health to enjoy this season and I wish you many more.

There are some amazing members on this forum, I consider it a privilege to have been able to guide for some of them last year and this year. There are guys on this forum who will restore your faith in the existence of good people when others are proving you otherwise.

GBD and I have long since worked out any petty differences that we may have had last year, and I look forward to sharing some drifts with him on the tribs this year. I can't "say hello to Bob Marley" anymore and I physically can't digest alcohol anymore, otherwise I would say let's go for a beer.

Did not expect the totally uncalled for and bogus flaming today, thank you mods for taking swift action.

The season is just beginning, there will be tens of thousands of salmon and trout to be caught by the skilled angler for months to come, there is no reason to engage in flaming.

No! You guys were getting up my ass for fishing underneath the tunnel. I told you that of that hundreds of anglers there everyday, no one's ever told me or anyone else not to fish, where I am legally allowed to fish! Lots of people choose to stand and fish from the tunnel!

Furthermore, I added that if the fish are completely stationery, it IS one of MANY strategies to wake them up a bit, in very large pools. Meaning, if by fishing underneath there, I happen to enliven a few salmon or trout, no harm done! I wasn't splashing around, I wasn't trying to stir them up!

Stagnant spring steelhead are primarily where I have seen them start hitting after people coming from upstream stir up the water, mud, and fish.

Apparently salmo really likes fishing under that tunnel. Heck I would too if my waders would stop leaking. I was there last week and saw like 30 guys underneath the tunnel. I did myself a favor and turned back 8)

Is this going to be (as the title suggests) a trip for the members who provide (or have provided) site content.. ie: Fishing experiences, pictures, general FAQ's..
Or
Is this an open "casting" (pun) call for all board members?

no problem with anybody fishin under the tunnel...the main issue was you hung your bag o skein at the top and were fishing the back, spooking the fish every time you came to get another fist sized chunk of skein. You weren't even trying to wade quietly...every time you were at the back and the front was quiet, the fish were settled and calm and quiet and we'd get bit and/or fish on...every time you came up the fish would get skittish and no bite for 10 mins or so then they'd settle down again but it wasn't long before you got them "stirred up" again. I couldn't figure out why you couldn't just have your bait on your person like oh every other fisher I've ever encountered. EVERYbody else I've ever seen fish the tunnel wades in there nice n quiet, picks a spot and drifts the drift. Every time you cme up to the top you were telling us we were fishing wrong or bragging about numbers or something. By the end of an hour I didn't even care you were spooking fish I was just thinkin "Man I wish that guy would shut up." GBD still talks about having to fight a nice hen he had in the mouth around the rusty buck you had in the wing. I hear about it alot of times we go down there or whenever the conversation of snapping off snagged fish comes up. Stationary fish are calm and feel secure and are very catchable. Skittish fish, not so much. Intentionally spooking them is a dumb idea. Salmon aren't spring steelhead and spring dropback steelhead hit under all conditions as they are in almost constant feed mode.

Ill bring the float rod of course but I have yet to catch anything of size on either one of my fly rods.....

Chase is great with the fly rod, you pick out a fish from a nice pool, he will position himself accordingly, cast with his fly rod and USUALLY by the second drift he's got that exact same fish banked. He's so good he can even do it with a bare hook, makes the fish eat everything

Most days spawn on the drift will out fish the fly-guy (even a book by that name...), but I can likely put you onto your first fish on the very fly YOU tied.....nuthin like it Nado brother...

Hey brother, well inittially that's what I was aiming for is the major contributors, educators and decent members, bit I got a bunch of PM's and posts from newer member and novices, so I got to thinking, hey, why not get some more dudes hooked on this sport we love so much.

Education through demonstration.

We all (for the most part) don't nesicarily see eye to eye, but I am going to make the safe conclusion that we all have a general idea of right and wrong. Through teachings of wizards like Notta. CC and Blair, (among many others) we can teach efficient and proper handling of fish, how to properly use tools of our trade, how to make outings successful as well as enjoyable, outstanding river etiquette, and hopefully get them addicted, so when the first whispers of salmon, chrome and browns comes trickling through media and word of mouth, they'll be like myself, and have everything prepared and ready to roll.

We all know, the better educated our fisherman are, the more enjoyable and tolerable a day on the river can be.

Hands on experiences are key!!! And word of mouth of proper river angling is omnipotent.

And btw. No more squabbling on my post, or I'll come find you and break your rods in half! Lol. We all fish differently, and that's why our day is going to be a great one, full of NO judgment, and ALL learning!
