first attempt at a mixed wing

Tried a Rogan's fancy mixed wing today. To put it bluntly it did not go the way I wanted haha. The tail's wayyy too long, the body is too fat and the wing is garbage, but it's slowly getting better.

It's actually not that bad. With the exception of the tail, proportions are good, head is good and from what we can see of the body, it looks good too. Marrying the wing parts takes a touch but it looks like you are on your way.

Whadaya know Chris. Your right. 35 years of fly fishing and I always assumed that "mixed winged" flies were just lazy mans married winged. Learn something knew everyday. Still a nice tie though.

That is insane and far superior to what I would be able to create. One of my main reason for not tying flies, after all that work if I lost it I would be heartbroken, if it didn't catch fish I would become frustrated and discard it. Later on regret it. Ill spend the $5/fly. LOL

might lose half of it after a cast but hey thats what learning is for

Thanks guys, but TBH it's still not well tied haha. Once I get it right it will be put under glass but for now I'll fish them. Shmogley, not sure what you mean? Lose half of what?

sorry I mean it looks like the material might come off if it gets pulled too hard or caught in something. but looks can be deceiving not trying to insult or anything just an observation. still way better then what I can do. keep at it!

Im sure it'll get smashed before that happens!

No problem, that probably won't happen but improperly mounted wings do fall out quite easily

I know Chase, I was going off of Bob's fly (the one you posted) but couldn't pull it off, but at least I can now get fairly consistant flat floss bodies that are also slim. I'll post a pic of the new one soon.

Floss and body is good...I think I know the issue Chris...
Tie the barbs in as though you're cinching in a married wing...that is, you'll tie/crush those barbs down (NOT FLAT) on their side...they will give you that full-dressed profile...
