Ya I can agree with the fact that if you are on/beside the water your going to catch more fish then sitting at home awaiting a "excellent" day of fishing that the calender promises. I have caught walleye at 12pm when theirs no waves, and it as hot at it could be in mid summer. Their are way to many factors that contribute to fish biting, if their are their, structure, water temp, calm/wavy, morning/evening, and even things like the current have a part in it. I would think that anyone who has a day of fishing and gets "skunked" should think of these things and do some research on why they caught no fish. I personally looked up what kind of bait the grand river was gving the fish, what was the temp of the water, and the type of day(overcast) and when I went last week I could not keep them off my line all day. All I did was mimick what was naturally happening near the dam and I was rewarded with one of the best days of fishing I have had. I used imatation minnows, and crank baits and tossed them towards the dam and let them drift down from one side towards me at shore. I caught walleye, and smallmouth and lost a couple unknowns. In my mind it was natural order, I mean the bait fish could only go as far as the dam then they were stuck, and sure enough all the predator fish would be waiting in the pools, rapids bhind them gulping up anything that came close. It was a great day, and I strongly recommend anyone research for 5min before they go fishing and set up some kind of plan of attack, I have had some great days of just winging it, but when you plan it and it happens it makes you realize that you make your own luck, and your only as good as you choose to be at fishing.
