your budget for rod and budget for reel or the same? personally i used a shimano stimula for 13 years. 60 dollar rod, as cheap as they come. never had an issue even on 25lb kings. hook, line and reel is way more important imo. again though everything is so cheaply made recently. i did buy a new rod i am happy with, but i knew what i was unhappy with in a first place.

OK

I searched that rod on google with limited success. There doesn't seem to be a float rod in that series anymore.

I found a shimano clarus float rod on cabela's. it's pointless though because it says they come in 1 piece and they're 13 feet long lol.

So the aventa is as good as the cheff, even though though the cheff is more money?
all the same bro---i had the raw 2---same as others---great CP for the price in my opinion--emphasis on "my opinion" ask goodentight he knows the okumas better than most --he smashes fish steady.

I fish the 13 foot Shimano Clarus currently. Definitely on the lighter side from other rods I have held (a bit more "whippy" feeling in my hands) but I must say mine has been great to me. I've landed both salmon and steelhead on mine with no issues.

For the price (entry point) I would say its going to be a hard rod to beat. If you want to step up your price range a bit I fished a matrix IM6 for a few drifts and I would say that I am looking into picking one of those up next season.

Also the Clarus I have is 4 piece which is so much better then 3 IMO. Can leave it in two pieces and pre rig everything before heading out to the water. With a three piece things tend to be tangled beyond repair when you ge tout of the car at the water (my experience at least).

The Shimano Clarus is 4 piece or if you prefer only break it down into two when transporting several of us on here have the same Rod & are perfectly happy with it.

streamside makes a 13ft winter rod for like 120, the 13 regular is about 100. i have a fenwick 12'6 HMX that has nice large guides for winter. it has lots of power to land nooks too.got mine for 90 bucks at al flatertys. i know a couple guys with them and all like them
Fenwick has always had decent rods, I have a smaller glass rod that's my favorite all round rod super sensitive, I'm getting all horny just thinking about it. I've caught salmon, steel, smallies and wallies on that baby. I've heard good things about the Clarus too, good reviews all round. Too many decisions eh? Budgets suck.

Fenwick hmx is the top of the line newby rod for float fishing. 85 bucks, you can't go wrong. buddy had it about 12 years before moving to raven which is mid class start to mid high class. hmx is not too whippy, good weight. good baack bone. whippy rod like calrus or my stimula are good if you are planning to fish with super thin leaders and want to fight a 15lb fish for 30 minutes. once you get few fish under you belt. you want something with more back bone. as far as reel, since i can't convince you to buy a second handed mid class reel for 200 bucks, i say buy the aventa out of all the reels you chose.

go here http://www.centerpinangling.com/centerpinreels.html can choose the rod from there also. Jim is a great guy, and will take care of you really well.

Second that, Jim at Centerpin is a standup guy. Bought my setup from him and never once did he try and push one brand over another.

I have looked all over kijiji for a used one but there isn't many, the reels are either $400 king pin, or $100 aventas.

Thanks. Not sure where im gonna get it. I'll probably just go to a store so that there's no shipping charge, and i can look at them.

I am lucky enough to go pick it up. there might be another location. to pick up. shipping is not that bad, compare to the travel you have to make across to find stuff. again together you are looking at 250 anyway or less. you will also need leader line, better hooks, floats, swivels, split shots. few flies. jigs. well it can get complicated and expensive. i bought few things, excluding my rod. cost me about 300 bucks. bought a pouch which i would recommend over vest. either way, you've pick a very expensive sport.

Once you've got it though you're good to go. Hockey- registration every year, plus skates & equipment every 10 years beer wings, golf- equipment outlay initially $500-$1000(conservative)green fees balls etc. No charge to go to the river besides gas and license. A man has to have a vice, it's cheaper than drinking and healthier, just have to convince the wife you're not runnin' around on her with all the time you'll spend fishing. :D

once they get ignored they don't care. lol but thank god my two hobbies are gym and fishing. that is where my money goes. gmy is about 600 a year. fishing can be expensive. buddy lost 4 lure in a tree matter of 10 minutes, that is 25 dollars. hockey is ridiculous, specially as a goalie.
