Sometimes it's hard not to snag them, but there's things I see on the river that obviously mean future snagged salmon.
Ripping floats when it doesn't go down, often is a big salmon snagger.
Using 7 foot leaders is another one. The salmon is not going to bite if the bait is being dragged on the bottom.
Fishing for them in inches of water or when they are running is another salmon snagger.
So is running crainkbaits over their backs which I see lure fisherman do on rivers.
Letting your line go in the salmons gaping mouth is another big one.
By the way it's illegal to keep a snagged fish which people do all the time. The fight is much better and easier when it's in their mouth.
