topic kinda explains everything.
i just ordered an abu black max and vendetta.

not sure im a starter so iv got no idea. im thinking braided maybe 12pound?

I'd have to say yes to braid but no about the 12 pound go 20-60 depending on what you'll be fishing.

Ya i find if you use really thin braid (20 pound and under) youll get a lot of birds nests and the thin line will dig into the spool and get all caught

If you are using a baitcaster don't use braid under 30 lbs. Too thin and it will cause you problems on the spool. Start off with a 30 lbs power pro or suffix line. I prefer power pro AND it is 2 bucks cheaper for a 150 yard spool. If you go with a fluorocarbon line, I would suggest a seaguar abrazx 15/17 lbs. Or if you are fishing weedy areas and fish are seeing your braid and are not biting, use the braid with a fluorocarbon 6 ft max leader. Use a Uni to Uni knot. The thing about braided line is that it comes at a smaller diameter of equal size to a monofilament line. For example, a 30 lbs braid will equal to an 8 lbs mono line.

I would all around never use Monofilament on a baitcaster.
same here i always get birdsnest even if i cas right i guess the line slips on the spool ? either way baitcaster = briad imo

I would start with 30 pound braid I really like sufix 832 on my bait casters, but I have more than one... When I started I stuck with a high abrashion resistance flouro 17 is a good size for cranking and flipping then when you get better and have more reels have one with braid and flouro best option tbh

wow all the replys awesome!

good point!

i got mixed up with the braid and mono pounds.( thats why i put 12pound braided lol)

my reel (black max) is only rated 30 for braided. what would happen if i put too thick of line? say 30+?

You can run with anything up to 65 lbs on a baitcaster no problem. I fish with a power pro original braid 65 lbs for big bass in heavy cover when I punch a jig or a soft bait into the slop. If the braid deters the fish I am still using my 17 lbs fluorocarbon leader approx 5-6 ft long.

well it may get stuck on the guide that spools up the line evenly or you wont get maximum capacity

Actually if he applies too much pressure his rod will break...

I use mono on my baitcaster and i have no problems. Set the brake right and it makes it HARD to get a birdnest.

Your rod will tell you what lines to put onto it capacity wise. It will refer to a mono diameter but you can still use a higher powered braid no problem.

hmm ok well i got my new rod and reel. looks amazing. iv been trying it in the backhard with some practice weights, and it feels natural. i rarely bird nest. every 20 casts or so....
i got some 20mono on there i think right now. the store i ordered it from put line on it for me for free.

im hoping to go to the pier this week sometime if i dont go out on lake erie with my uncle.

im gonna get some photos of it. its not the ugly rod its the sexy rod ;)

yea i was thinking of getting an ugly stick for my second rod.
my cousin has one and she says you can throw on the ground and hit it and ect.....and it will rarely break.
very durrible. im not gonna throw it and abuse it but its for sure at durable rod lol
definitely gonna be my next rod
