lakers from shore??

Ontario Fishing Forums

Help Support Ontario Fishing Forums:

The whirlpool is a sure bet. But you will go through a lot of browns and bows before you land one (not really an issue  ). At least that was the case last year. You should also go before February. I find that their numbers go down after new years.

If you get a NY fishing license you can fish the ArtPark drift. It's just over the river from queenston, just down from the whirlpool. They go through a lot of lakers this time of year looking for steelies & browns. Lakers usually come first. They spawn in the fall an I believe they are closed soon? Check for yourself though.

You can get some Huge lakers in the niagara. 15lbs are not uncommon.

Why do you want to catch lakers when you can catch salmon & rainbows?

Psssst, the season closed on Sept. 30 for lakers in most of Ontario (including Lake O & Niagara). Opens up for winter fishing on Dec. 1.

Yah, didn't feel like checking...

Right now float some big'ol salmon roe sacks (8-10 eggers)
You're going to need a fairly long lead there. 10'ish
Early winter a lot of guys float maribou jigs or gulp 2.5" or 3" shiner minnows.
You can always chuck spinners or spoons too. Slow retrieve in the whirlpool.

Definitely fish the Niagara.

There were more Lakers than bows last year. One day I landed over 20 lakers. Not exaggerating, just ask around :)

You can't specifically target them right now, but you can't help it when theres bows, browns, salmon and lakers all feeding on the same bait, which by the way, plastic minnow baits on jigs = deadly from now until March.

If anyone ever wants some help down at the Niagara I'm generally down at the pool/glen every weekend from now until March lol...

Will definately take some valued pointers (Since your offering)

Last weekend ... looks like Malibu Jigs & Flys were the trick.
Bottom Bouncing was not as productive at all.

Thanks for the info

I got some hookups last weekend on both Marabou Jigs and Floating single eggs. This was for salmon though, not lakers or steel. Gotta either be super stealthy with the single eggs or piss em off with the jigs.

I hope to catch my first fish at the Whirlpool. If I ever go again.

Edit: Italo goes there this time of year. Just use whatever you see him using...seriously http://www.canadian-sportfishing.com/Custom/blog/?p=8661

Edit2: Click on the link. Blair already met him. Go figure.

Italo is a hack....

He was doing a segment there last year in the winter and wasn't catching crap. Meanwhile someone I know was down there slamming fish. Italo walked over and saw what he was using.

10 minutes later Italo was doing a video segment on how to catch bows with the setup that my friend was using. ..

And that bow in his picture is not 10lbs.. Maybe 6-7....

Italo is a very nice man!
I never found him to be "arrogant" or act like a "Know it all"

We all entiltled to our opinions .. yours included!
But.... seriously: No need to call him a "Hack"

We all pick up "Pointers" from other fishermen ... (and can be having "off Days")

*** Wish I had as successful FISHING SHOW like he does!
Imagine earning a great living while doing something you absolutely love to do

HEAVEN

I met him at the Whirlpool last weekend ( I took the pic of his catch). He had no issues taking ten minutes off and going over his set up and tactics with me.... I was having no luck fishing off the bottom ( getting bites but also getting snagged off).

When I'm not catching fish and someone near me is catching fish after fish I to would be trying to see what they were using.I generally find fellow fishermen willing to help you out . I'm not a big Italo fan,but he is still filming shows.

He is a nice guy. I didn't say he wasn't.

But spying through the trees to spy on a rig that my friend was using, and then proceeding to do a video segment on that very rig is arrogant.

LOL

Well said.

I guess the BUSINESS PRESSURES in the fishing world ... can make one "do things".
No excuse

I look forward to meeting you in person at the pool .... not through the trees!

Fish On!

I met him the Sportman's show. A very nice guy and willing to share his techniques. I agree with Blair, if you are paying camera man, etc to film a show and not catching any, you would use other people's experince, maybe by spying. his show is one of the few that you actually learn something from, rather than seeing a fisherman having fun without disclosing anything.
