Well this weekend I finally did it, I went all in and left all my other gear at home. I had a short window in the morning since I was already pre-booked for yard work in the afternoon. The morning got off to a rough start with my alarm clock not going off….AGAIN! Oh well, made it to the water by 8am and still had a good four hours to hone my fly skills. Started off rusty and was having a difficult time making the long casts but it wasn’t long before I figured it out and was casting ¾ of the way across the water with a single back cast and a light flick of the wrist. I was using my 4 weight so I thought it was going to be a lot more difficult getting the streamers I was using that far out.
I was hoping to get one of the bigger browns but the little guys were all I could find. They were attaching my large wooly buggers all day and I couldn’t react quick enough to set the hook before they dropped the fly. It also could have been difficult to set because I was using a fly to target the bigger fish and these little guys were just being greedy. Finally at the last hole of the day I managed to connect with two little guys, the first pictured below was around 8-9†and the second was a good 9â€er +. I must have missed 30 or more hits at the last hole alone, I tried throwing smaller flies like hares ear and caddis emergers but they didn’t want any of it. They has a taste for the big flies and that was all they would hit. I’ll be hitting the fly bench tonight to tie some micro buggers for next time and I think I have a new summer fishing addiction!
