After reading the recent "white bucket " post about some people having 6 inch walleye in their bucket I have to wonder. People are really keeping tiny fish, I have seen it on the Grand, often.
I really don't know how to get this started, or maybe I just did. I hope you guys and gals will help. What I want to say is that the MNR should have a minimum size limit on any fish. No walleye under 8 inches may be kept. No bass under 8 inches may be kept, etc
Slots are fine in certain areas, but the babies should be left alone at least until they have had the chance to spawn once. I think we need to get a message out there to the MNR.

Alfie.

I'm with ya on that! I've seen tons of baby fish keep.

What I think we have to do, is figure out how old certain species of fish must be to spawn and then find the average length of a fish that age. I do some research and see what I can come up with.

Oh Boy am I excited!

I may disagree on that.

i would rather see a slot size to be kept on smaller fish and preserve average to bigger fish....why?

first bigger and mature fish lay more eggs and are less chance to be eaten.
bigger fish carry more mercure and bad toxin in their body and isn't to tasty when they are above average.
if we put a limit only on smaller fish to be saved...everyone will keep trophy fish while the smaller fish might just end up being eaten by bigger game fish.

I think all together all fish should have slot size expect for panfish and lower quotas but thats just me. People are too gready...fish meat is cheap at the market.
Gas expence to go fishing on shore fishing hot spot from toronto would cover a few fillet of nice salmon compared to a few smaller fish

yupper, again I think many anglers take for granted the fisheries we have and how incredibly precious every fish is. Think for a moment the lifelong struggle that a 5 lb smallmouth has undertaken to get from fry to trophy.

Education, consideration and respect. We like to think that everything has been placed on this planet so we can milk it dry, it's ours for the taking.

We are here for such a short time. We must all tread lightly and do our part. It's 2012 and we need to wake up to the repercussions of throwing a tiny walleye into a bucket for dinner or destroying a 12 foot ancient sturgeon by battling it for a few hours in the current.

ugh!

*gets off soap box*

It does look disturbing when small fish are taken, I mean what the F*&k for, it will never be a meal unless you're talking smelt. But I'am with Kick on this one.

I never have been, or ever will be a trophy hunter, I don't want to be. If I catch a big one great, if not then I'll settle for any even panfish. But not everyone thinks that way.

The adult fish know that their young are vulnerable to predation, they know to lay even more eggs. I kinda remember one episode of my hero Jacques Cousteau, where he said that most of the sea turtle babies will be eaten and only a small number will survive to adulthood, he may have said less then 1% survive.

I would prefer Slot sizes be on every popular fishing or pertain to all bodies of water to protect the fish. We need a biologist in here to determine what's the best size and for which species. The MNR and a bunch of government departments laid off 19,000 people, or some insane number like that. Even in government, they make 1 person do the workload of 3 or 4 people. Both my sisters work or worked for the government. One still does and the other got a package with 2 year salary.

If anyone wants to start a petition to bring in slot limits, I'm there to sign. But will the MNR actually do it and be able to enforce it (now that they are even more understaffed), and will everyone follow it (due to lack of knowing the Regs)? Seems the government these days is more money hungry and not concerned with their civic duty. To me they are more like organized criminals then servants of the people and country. But that's a whole other can of worms.

Hmmm, good point. You aren't worried that if the slot size was to be kept on smaller fish that it will destroy the fishery as the old ones will die and there will be very little "young" fish to replace them?

Im going to have to agree with this post. I would much rather see an angler keep their limit of 6" walleye rather than their limit of 18" walleye, chances are 50% of those 6" walleye wont even make it to spawning size.

The problem here though is that chances are that if an angler is keeping 6" fish then they probably couldnt care less about what the regulations are. So creating a minimum size or a slot size doesnt really benefit the situation at all.

I agree with you 100%! We really need a biologist to help as I do not have a clue about these kinds of things. Today's government really makes me sick, but like grub said it's a different issue. ;-)

What are some things that you think could help this situation?

In the old days...when the goverment did something like tacking "alchool away" the people made a revolution....they got together and made things happen. But now a days people are to scared.

What rusty 420 did a week or so ago...imagine if it was done by 10 people at once....It would show a strong point and some respect would be earned....I think lol

I can't disagree with you there but like staffman said we do not have the right to intervene. I'm in the process of seeing if the MNR would be willing to take on volunteers to act on the CO's behalf in distributing tickets and what not. It could like a neighborhood watch type of thing. Just an Idea what do you guys think?

More MNR officers and more education is the only solution.
More MNR officers is the only way. You can have all the rules you want but the jackass who doesn't follow them isn't going to suddenly start following them... The scarcity of the MNR is scary. The last (and only time) I've had one talk to me was when I was 16 and I'm 25 now...

History has shown that revolution and violence against the establishment invokes the quickest and most drastic changes. But we all know who the Police are here "To serve and Protect" (hint; not the public).

I hope you're j/k about the 10 ppl. History has also shown that that could be seen as a lynch mob and 1 pissed off person could spurn a group beating. That would not help the situation.

Simplest answer would be camera to capture illegal activity, cell phone to call police. If no cell phone then take pics of the person and car they came in or drive and send photo to police, let them handle the rest. What could be simpler then that? You won't get into a potentially dangerous situation that way, risk life and limb for a few fish.

I wouldn't risk my safety on a fish especially if I was with kids.

I was just messing around guys! lol

Defenatly need more mnr out their but it won't change anything to many people think they have the right to everything they catch.
