Needed some advice on getting a new CP reel

Why not save some coin and try an Islander? They're very light, durable and the start up is just as good as any other center pin out there. I've used the kingpin its a very good reel, does it warrant the greater price tag? I don't think so. I really like the looks of them though, but dollar for dollar I don't believe there is better value for money than the Islander. Don't forget that Islander makes their reels in Canada too.

you are absolutely right, that is the problem, islanders are just ugly. the islander that can stand toe to toe with the kinpin is $480, the upgraded bearing version.

I just took the plunge and bought an islander yesterday.

Everything I've heard about them sold me;

Durable - not as temperamental as KP (can rinse grit in steam)
Less expensive
Canadian made
Strong clicker
Look mean!

Cons; (?) (if these apply to your style)

Smaller diameter spool
Bit heavier

I'm fishing tomorrow for the test drive, I'll tell you if it works!

I have an Islander, You won't be disappointed. If you think a mere gram or 2 is heavier, you wont like the idea of adding weight to the butt of your rod to make a more balanced setup. Might be heavier in total but being balanced will make it more enjoyable after fishing for 8 10 even 12 hours.

can't be heavier than stanton anyways, i know what you mean, heavier rod the heavier the reel has to be to balance. still not sold on the design :(

Islander went 0/0 today, with a big 8' icicle hanging on the end of my line. Tough conditions.

Can't believe the startup difference between the islander and the aventa. Very nice, wish I bought it in September :)

I would recommend it, might need to wait til April to break it in...

yeah islander is 3 times the price, it should do better. i personally called it quits this year for river fishing. maybe late feb with ice out!

entire week maybe, one weekend will just slush everything. march is toooo far away. 3 month, i am going to die looking at my new reel sitting and collecting dust lol

wanna sell the stanton? trade? i have owned 2 stantons and find they fish very well. if your looking for lightwight raven is sst 3 is good. islander like stanton has had problems with. spindles warping. you want bombproof go with loomis. like was said dont focus on the weight the riverkeeper i fish now is VERY heavy but balances the 15 fter really well. the sheff and stanton weighing in around 7 -8 oz feel like a kids toy in comparrison

Once you use it a few times it loosens up even more. I relubed mine after 4 times fishing and I guess fresh grease tightens it up ever so slightly.Easy maintenance. You get just a bit of grit in there or debris from bushwhacking and you know right away.

wanted to buy a riverkeeper but robb is not making any till either this fall or next fall. i rather buy brand new. have not heard too many good things about the islander start up yet, even with abec 7. also Stanton 2000 version is heavy as hell. not sure where you got Stanton was 7-8 ounches. i never had any problem with Stanton. just the start up. and recently found out i can buy abec 7 bearings to make it better. still no word from Stanton on tell me which type of bearing my reel uses already. weight needs to be enough to balance your rod and reel, i agree.
raven is a great reel, but a down grade to stanton. i wanted to get an upgrade. what do you mean with spindle warping?you mean out of alignment? you can pm me for more details.

Not sure if there are different models of Stantons but Bocca bearings website has listings of bearings based on the float reel.

Maybe consider a Spahr?

I'm no float fishing "expert" but I bought one off him last fall and have landed a whack of salmon and a bunch of bows with it and haven't had any issues what so ever.

Pretty happy with it, so I ended up picking up another one off him the other day for a song and a dance. Now I need another rod though...

Thanks for the link. I can get Abec 7 myself. but I really don't know what the stock bearing system is in the first place. more than likely it will be an upgrade. but you never know.

i believe the guy that built my reel has done some bearing swaps in stantons. His name is Wayne at canadafishingreels.com. he is in mexico for the winter, but if you can wait till spring, maybe try him on. He is a great guy and i had some work done on some other reels (new custom handles for 2 reels) and the work was completed in 3 days!!!!

sounds good, i took it to angler specialty today, guy tried to take out the bearings with no luck, he said he has to destroy it to replace it with the abec 7 i was about to buy, he told me that i am better off buying a new reel. on that note, got a chance to hold a IS, feels really cheap imo, it was the abec 5. I was not impressed at all. the shopping continues. got the chance to handle their handmade reel, it has a drag, 4.5 inches. what a beauty, with price tag of 750 of course :(
