After hitting the river on March 26 and fishing Lake Ontario March 27 I decided to go back to one of my favorite waters again hoping that the cold weather today would bring in some fresh drop back females.
I arrived on my spot and took about 5 drifts and I hooked into a nice 9-10lb female. After a 10 minute battle with her I landed it, took a few quick photos and released her back into the water. I continued to fish the area and about 10 minutes later I hooked into another big rainbow. Once again the fish battled hard for 10 minutes until I was able to get a few photos. The second fish was almost identical to the first one in size, 9-10lbs.
I continued to fish when I spotted something in the water...Unfortunately what I saw was a giant dead rainbow . This fish was 13-14 pounds and it had a hook and bait in its pelvic fin. From my observation I noticed that the trout had clearly snapped the line and been severely injured during the fight that had occurred which eventually led to its death. I have no idea if it had been intentionally snagged or was hooked accidentally but either way this fish is no longer with us
Other than the sad ending to the evening, I feel I did well hooking, landing and releasing two rainbows and staying warm on this snowy evening. Here are a few photos from the outing. Enjoy!
