so i fished east from nov 18 to 23 on vacation, the first three days i actually forced myself to try my 6 weight fly outfit as i like that style of fishing as well, no success with that it was more about practicing and learning as i'm still very new at the fly stuff. Day 4 gear up the pin stuff and back at it have slightly more experience with this stuff compare to the fly stuff, any way met up with a fellow pinner who helped me with some advice and pointers for the water conditions. So make some adjustments and bingo end up fighting my first steelhead on the pin a beauty hen i put her at 5lb, she was hot to say the least as soon as she felt that hook she was zippin here and there, did some head shakes a few jumps and run down to the next pool where she was landed by helpful fellow angler, take a few pics and release her. I will never forget that moment, but pics didn't turn out WTF oh well shoot button wasn't pressed fully darn no pics of that fish to share. Day 5 i get into my second fish early not as big as the first but still very strong fish another hen around 2lb to 3lb we do a little battle, bring her in and take a few pics then set her on her way. Later day 5 manage to hit up another fish, managed to keep this one from heading down to the next pool it was another hen.Snap a few shots and release her on her way, again 2lb to 3lb range.Day 6 weather was changing through out the day not much happening for me, but i keep at it and later i hit a small shaker feel it for a few seconds then gone terrible hook set, funny thing was that i hit this fish on a not usual color for the conditions. I had used up the more usual color by this time darn. So as dave mercer would say for the score i went 3 for 4 on the fish, made i don't know how many casts and drifts and walked, waded and fished between 6 to 8 hours each day. The first three nights i stayed at a hotel, next two in the car and last night driving then resting for a few hours then continue on my way back home. Here are some pics, if you recognize the water or rocks ok but please don't say the name don't want to cause any trouble.

Been fishing the exact same combo for years now, love it. Congrats on the fish, I too tend to switch between the fly and pin but always end up back with the pin

yeah i'm liking the rv9 and the islander, I wish they would have put the plastic style reel sliding rings on it as for the islander it feels like it will last a long time, my reel handles were real noisy just had to add some grease and all is quite now. maybe someday i'll run into a fly fisher while on the water who will be willing to give some help.

thanks troutchaser and cjr it was nice to fight and land some chrome, they are strong even the average size ones. not sure what will happen when i'm able to fight some the bigger ones.

yeah buck i hope so , I saw some big fish fought by both pinners and flyers some were landed and some were lost

I actually have the same problem with mine... the wooden handles squeek so loud that im emberassed fishing beside anglers I dont know. Im going to have to try greasing them too then and see if itll help. Thanks Chris

Hey
From what I hear you can use a bit of wax on the end of the handles.
That should stop the squeaking, that was the only issue when I had that reel.

beauty fish chris  , i had the squeaking problem as well just unscrew them take them off and put some grease on works like a charm  islanders are a work horse i owned a few still have one left.

used my islander a few times with the annoying squeaky noise when you reel, i was so pissed this year when trying for chinooks and i'm sure the people around hated it as well finally remembered before this trip to add some grease to the handles and noise gone for now :) thanks floatdrifter and spinninreel it felt good to get some on the pin :)

Do you guys have the wood or plastic handles on your islanders? I got wood but no noise..yet :) just wondering if i should prepare for this in the future.
