thats right luke all methods do have pros and cons. my one buddy just breaks the leader at the hook unless its a picture worthy fish, con hooks can get expensive. i think the message here is whatever method you use to handle fish just do it with care and concern for the fish's well being.

Not to mention the con of leaving the fish with a piercing that I'm sure it could do without. :(

i was wondering about that do you think it could effect feeding behaviour? maybe make the trout easier to see by pray species? i wouldnt do it personally i like to use a hook for as long as i can and dont see a problem with handling them

The other trout probably just think the fish is a punk. :D

All kidding aside, just a few weeks ago I saw a guy land a healthy 4-5lb chromer that was missing most of its lower jaw. The tongue on it had turned green and coarse because it was exposed to the elements, but the fish otherwise was a perfectly proportioned and specimen. I dont think him leaving the hooks in is the end of the world but if he has time to snap the leader at the hook he could probably get the hook out. Like I said to each his own :)

I read in a fishing magazine in a fishing myths article that it is not better to cut the line and leave the hook when a bass inhales your bait which is what I was taught when I first started out fishing. The hook will take much longer than the fishes life span to deteriorate and will cause infection. It is best to do everything within your ability to remove the hook from the bass and if you cant succeed than the fish will have to be table fare.

In the case of a trout being hooked in the outside of the mouth the fish will likely be able to get rid of the hook in a reasonable amount of time, just like when we get a sliver the fishes body will reject the hook and slowly push it out. but I would think it makes alot more sense to just remove the hook if its that accessible.
