I got a call last Thurs. at about 11 pm. Said we had a 2 day job in Peterbourgh. I figured, Okay long week-end, I work Fri and part of Sat and get home to go fishing.
Well no, the job turned into a nightmare of work. Oh did I mention the job turned out to be on Buckhorn Lake in the Kawarthas, not Peterbourgh at all. And 5 days not 2?
And the lady who owned the house we were working on also owned the cabin next door and allowed us to stay there.
Long week-end, no gear and watching all the boats drifting and trolling by bringing in Walleye and oos Bass.
I missed out on the St Marys last year because I brought no gear. Can anyone recommend a good telescoping type rod I can take on last minute trips like this? Boss-man owes me lots of money, so cost is not really an issue, but the guys I was with bought some 20 dollar rigs at Home-Hareware, that were crap. I'm looking for something good, I have a locker in the work trailer that is about 3 ft high and I can rig up a permanent place in my locker.
As fishingnoob would say, "What kind of set-ups do you guys have?"

Hey Alfie,

I know many fly-rod companies that make "travel rods" - essentially break down into a case about a foot long. The last one I saw was in an Orvis catalogue and came with a spinning reel as well. If I remember correctly, I think the price was somewhere in between 200-300 dollars. I'll check the catalogue when I get home from work and confirm for you :)

Cheers,

Cody

i HIGHLY recommend a five piece, not a telescopic.

i find the telescopics twist constantly. and though these days it's less of an issue, make certain it's not a metal ferrule five piece.

fenwick makes some great five pieces in the 70.00 range.

if you want to go ultralight, i absolutely LOVE my daiwa minispin (rod and reel) 50.00 or so, WITH reel... okay quality reel, great quality rod... packs up to a fill package the size of about three grilled cheese sandwiches....

why not get a 2pc. 6ft light rod?I always keep one on my trunk and if i had to use the van from work. it's no hassle and doesn't take a lot of space. i just bring a single tackle. that said. when I'm working and have to go fishing (i have 4-6hr between the job) this will be full-on hardware fishing.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look at some of your suggestions.

I actually have an Orvis "back-country" fly rod and reel, 4 piece rod, very nice. Retail about 900, but it ain't living in the work trailer, ever :)
I like the sound of a spinning set-up and the price range.
Just need to have something in my locker, in case.
The new installations manager where I work is from B.C. and doesn't know On very well. Recently he handed us a job and after looking at a map told us it was near Toronto. It turned out to be in Collingwood. You can see what I am dealing with.

Well your boss being from BC explains it. Toronto to Collingwood is in fact close to most of the west coast guys. I drove my cousin (from Alberta) from Downtown TO to Gravehurst and all he said..."we're here already?"

Lol. Not my boss. His point was that it was a local job for us, from Hamilton. We didn't have to stay there, we could drive back and forth each day, yeah like 6 hours driving per day, we don't get paid for driving time. Not going to happen, they are going to pay for a motel or else driving time.

Thanks CH for the offer. I have checked online and like what I see, I like the Orvis fly rig so I'm sure a spinning combo will be great, I'm going to check it out ASAP and likely go with it.

Sorry Dugger. This is a fishing forum
I went too The Soo with no gear last Dec and it turned out we couldnt work for 3 days. I watched the St Marys for 3 days while all my gear was 7 hours away. Swore I would never leave town without a rod again.
And now I did it again.

....but you took your rod to Paisley right?
