hey, i got a nice bow this weekend that came home with me... from up north... she had a nice belly of eggs in her... still in the skeins of course but a very nice color, an almost clear. but still far from ready..
i know that trout eggs can be real good for spring fishing, and i hate to see things go to waste. so i want to try to keep them and use them....

what types of ways are there to cure and store the skeins?
i have pink pro cure. and a few methods. but i am curious to hear what others think...
any suggestions?
thanks~

Personally, I just throw in quite a bit of SEA SALT and shake it up ... then put in a jar and Freeze.
Or divide off into smaller Baby jars, so you only need to unthaw (1) at a time when needed.

When tying Roe Bags, Sometimes a little bit of SKEEN doesnt matter at all.
It actually STINKS real good.

The only EXCEPTION for having PERFECT LOOKING ROE BAGS is when you have 1-2-3 eggs in White mess for those GIN CLEAR - FINICKY FISH DAYS.
Which really isnt that often.

I do alot of Milky Water, Deep Water and NIGHT fishing ... so a good 70% of my ROE BAGS are all based upon SCENT.
The gooyer and stinckyer... the better!

Blair , I personally use Borax . I pour it out onto a baking sheet and basically treat the skein as you would a fillet in flour .
You get the borax well into the skein and when covered well I just bag it and freeze it , you can also cut it into small chunks , cover with borax and then freeze .
The borax keeps the skein dry to the touch and as soon as it touches the water , it just disolves.

If you unfortunately have take the egg skein from a spawning population of trout, atleast treat it with respect and ignore everything that is ever uttered from Blair's mouth.

Borax adds preservative minerals to an egg, salt sucks moisture from it.

You decide how to preserve and present the natural bait you have taken.

Is there some kind of a TROLL Speaking?

Go hide under your bridge.

You are a useless idiot that at best cuts & pastes from your betters, and at worst speaks just to hear your own voice.

Dousing a skein with salt is the WORST thing you can do. If you want to argue that, I can show you a brick wall you can shout at. You loud ugly moran.

Intelligent debate among adults means not calling people names. This is not Romper room.

I don't have time to babysit, so please be respectful. Final warning.

hmmm , well i wont use any kind of any salts... i have never hard any luck when doing so...
borax i find takes the sent away, but does not dry eggs, and will make them last a long time. but i find they turn to rubber..

i think i will try out my pro cure on them, i seen a few videos on how to use the pro cure on skiens, soak few hours and dry off a bit..

i may try just borax on half of them....

thanks for the pointers.. hope we can all be friends...:p

^Borax would be your best bet. -As notta steeler stated.
-Try not to be too concerned about scent...

LOL Blair I gotta ask...how do you intend *Smiles* to be read/interpreted. If you could possibly post a youtube video of you saying *SMILES* in the tone and context you want us to read it in I think it would help a few of us out...LOL

Since the conception of the Internet, forums, Text messages .. (I'm "OLD")
I have never used the inverted bracket - slash double colon (I dont even know the real name - took me 5 years to figure out what lol meant)
So ... instead of using a "Emoticon" or the previous mentioned method ... I have always written smiles in between little stars.

It really means *SMILES* in a NICE WAY!
Not sarcasm .... just simply a way of being more personal (We smile alot face to face)
Hard to relay that across a one dimensional medium.

I hope that it has not been misinterpretted.

Best to at least try to be HAPPY (99% of the time)
No ones perfect ... certainly not me!

ps: By the way ...

In answer to the TOPIC "Rainbow Skiens":

My method of "SALTING" is just that - "My method".
There are several different ways to Cure or NON Cure roe.

I believe i offered my opinion and even explained how it works for me.
I forgot to mention this:

When you add the SEA SALT in does SUCK OUT goo from the eggs (STINKY GOO).
I keep this "GOO" in a separate jar and freeze also.

When it is time to UNTHAW the eggs, I add back in the GOO and they REABSORB the stuff.
THUS reabsorbing the SCENT!

*
Many guys did mention that the "SCENT" was NOT IMPORTANT.
I disagree (Which does not make them wrong)

I believe there are (2) obvious important variables to ROE:

1. Scent
2. Appearance and Presentation

From what I can determine, many of the anglers who suggested SCENT not being that important are focusing on PRESENTATION.
Probably doing a lot of day/ morning fishing in clear tribs.

I WOULD AGREE to the SUPER IMPORTANCE of this!

However, I BELIEVE that the whole purpose of even using ROE is the SCENT.
If i really just wanted "Appearance" there are many imitation or other Baits to use.

In a PERFECT WORLD - having BOTH (Appearance & Scent) is the way to go!

NO ONE is WRONG ... people just have "Different Ways" of doing things, Different preferences, Different Superstitions....

BEST to WHAT EVER method we so CHOOSE to use!
