I went down to the river a few times and every time someone hooked a salmon, it broke water right away and they were usually in the 20 lb range but a few days ago one guy hooked a salmon that didn't break water at all...the guy lost it but he was telling me that the bigger ones 35+ lbs dont usually break water...is that true? btw my bad for starting a new topic for a question like this

I caught one recently, in the 35lb range, and it did not break water NOR go for any fast runs. It fought for about 5 minutes. It was hooked almost inside the throat. It was a male and the best explanation I could think of was that someone had fought it out earlier and it was still recouping. Was using 8lb test.

Some fish just dont fight hard, doesnt necessarily mean it was snagged or caught previously. Fight changes from fish to fish and also based on how it was hooked, hook in the back of the throat could have injured the fish causing it to put up less of a fight. I have only caught one salmon in the past, but I did also accidentally snag one once while fishing for steel and I only found out it was snagged when it broke the surface and I saw my spinner in its dorsal fin so that goes to show that there is no exact formula for when a fish will break the surface.

ones that don't break are either old boots/ or snagged. i've had my fare share of salmons and most do leap out like crazy if hooked in the mouth.

Nah, you're just flossing them in water so shallow they run out of room in the shallows. Not so much the fish going up but the water going down :p

The fact is there are so few actual 35lb Kings caught nobody catches enough to notice a difference. I've had 40" fish leap out of the water and tail walk like a tarpon, and I've had 5lb coho's just roll up the line like a lake trout.

This is not a fact!!! But in my experience the larger fish stay to the bottom and i find this true for most of my favourite fish. Browns Rainbow and salmon. I can say I have had larger fish break the water but most of the time they stick to the bottom. Again I am not claiming this to be a fact, But it is my experience.
And trust me I am not flossing large browns with my fly rod.......lol
